MagMod MagBeam Reviews

Does the job.

Pro: No more Velcro. MagMod fits tight to flash head. MagBeam snaps on and stays on. Silicone hood collapses easily once you learn how. (Go to their website to learn how) Con: The MagMod System is heavy on the flash head. The weight of the MagBeam doesn't give my Metz flash any trouble in the normal straight ahead locked position, but their other accessories, like the MagBounce can cause the head to sag, since the pivoting flash head was not designed to bear any weight.

Flawed design

I had my reservations about buying this modifier. I wanted something easy to use that would provide the light I desired. Right out of the gate, I noticed some flaws in the design of this item. First, the front fresnel element makes the modifier heavy. so when it is in landscape orientation, it is weighed down at full extension, causing the light to be in the wrong place on the subject. This can be easily adjusted by the assistant when used on an AD200, but the pivoting head on a flash gun is subject to the extra weight. I noticed it does not have so much of this issue in portrait/vertical orientation. Second, the collapsible body is not as easy to collapse as described. This is not a deal breaker, but it has already become an annoyance. This is still a good purchase, but don't expect it to be the wonder item that makes all your flash photography woes go away. It may, in fact, cause some.

Not quite perfect

It's too heavy and lowers the flash from its natural position. This flaw had me leaving the Magbeam behind more often than I would have liked. It works well otherwise.

Too heavy

Good concept, this product needs a new design and material, first off, once it has been extended, it really takes time to collapse , and it is too heavy to keep my godox stay the proper angle .

A Disappointment

I was hoping that this kit would replace my Better Beamer for bird photography. I have several other MagMod products that are excellent. I decided, in spite of some negative comments by other reviewers, that I would spend the money to experiment with this flash extender. Results were unsatisfactory. This device is significantly more difficult to use than the Better Beamer. The tube is difficult to collapse, even after practicing the procedure, and it is impossible to collapse with the lens attached. This means the lens must be removed for storage every time I put the unit back in my bag. A protective storage pouch for the Fresnel lens is no longer included in the kit. If a user wants to avoid damage to the lens while it is stowed in a camera bag, a substitute must be found. The fact that the rubber cone is fairly heavy, and requires an aiming adjustment every time it is mounted, is also an irritation. For me, using a flash extender in the field is always a cumbersome procedure, but this device is more of a nuisance than a help. It is back to the Beamer for me.

Will it fit the Godox a200 round or speedlight heads?
Asked by: Guy
Guy.. At this time, our official position is: we don't recommend using MagMod products with Round head flashes, especially since we didn't design them to work with Round Head flashes. That being said, it hasn't stopped some customers from giving it a try with varying degrees of success.

Albert - Yes indeed... the mount of our system, the MagGrip - is a universal, stretch to fit, elastic band that will work on 95% of all speedlights that are of the same general shape and size of any other speedlight. You are good to purchase knowing that MagMod will work on your Yongnuo YN600EX.

Metz 64 AF1?
Asked by: James
Yes, it should fit. It does fit on the Metz 58 AF 2 and that is large like the 64. Magmod says, While we haven't tested the MagGrip with every flash on the market, we are confident that the MagGrip will work with most flashes that have a rectangular flash head, and are close in shape and size to these common flashes: • The Nikon SB900 series • The Canon 600 EX-RT series • The Sony HVL-F60M • The Olympus FL-600R • The Yongnuo YN 560 III • The Neewer TT560 • The Godox AD200
