A multi-layer coating helps prevent flare and ghosting along with the included rectangular lens hood. The internal focusing lens also has a non-rotating filter ring for precise use of numerous filter types. Additionally, it boasts a dust- and moisture-resistant design.

This benchmark standard 50mm lens provides a natural field of view with incredible performance across the image and outstanding sharpness. As an L-mount optic it is also compatible with T-series APS-C cameras where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Super-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and provides excellent control over focus position for selective focus applications.
Two aspherical elements and four anomalous partial dispersion glass elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range and increase image sharpness and clarity.
A multi-layer coating helps prevent and minimize flare and ghosting.
Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in trying shooting conditions.
Internal focusing design prevents the front filter ring from rotating during operation to better enable working with circular polarizers, graduated ND filter, or other types of filters dependent on a specific orientation.

Perfection

I've used pretty much every 50mm worth owning by Sony/Canon/Nikon. This 50 is the best, if you can deal with the physical size it's just stunning. On a SL2 the focus accuracy at f1.4 is fantastic, and it's very sharp. The bokeh is just gorgeous. Stopped down to f/8-11 - it's a incredible landscape lens rendering tons of detail. If you can afford it, get it.

Ultimate 50mm

This lens is AMAZING, it's the sharpest 50 I've ever shot, colors are rich and match what the eye see's. AF on my SL is very accurate. The transition from in focus to the out of focus area makes everything you shoot pop. I shot it head to head with the tiny M version on my SL, I had both for a few weeks. The images where nearly identical but with the SL, every image was in perfect focus, not so much with the M version when you're not shooting static subjects. So, I sold the M version. The AF could be faster, it feels like a portrait lens in that respect, like an 85mm speed and as far as size it's huge and heavy...A serious beast. But, it's the best 50 I've shot, Canon L's, Sony GM's, Sigma Art's, Nikon G's....Leica M's....Doesn't matter, if you want the best 50, and you're okay with weight and you're not shooting sports with it, this is it I think.

Massive, but expect rewarding imagery.

Leica M shooter for decades (now M10P), I decided to try the SL system with the Panasonic S1R coupled with this Summilux-SL 50mm. The combo impress with unconventional size and weight. Once working on the 47 Mpx raw files in Lightroom, your efforts are rewarded: I never had this type of resolution with any f/1.4 lens! No softness at all. The smoothness of the out of focus areas is remarkable, bokeh is really unique and makes this lens part of best practices for any portrait photography. AF could be faster, but at this point, I am glad that it is precise enough to get the image perfectly sharp where I want, mostly when I want it. Truly a master piece, this lens should be on your to-shoot-with list. I did some side by side comparisons with the Leica M Apo-Summicron 50mm f/2 and it seems to me that the SL is over performing it in overall clarity/definition at same aperture. A-MA-ZING. The real issue, after this one (almost) everything looks kind of faded, so you have no choice but to carry the load!

A couple of reviewers have said this is the best 50mm lens, and they have named Sony, Canon and Nikon. My question is, does that include the Sony 50/1.2 GM lens? Has anyone compared this Leica 50/1.4 with the Sony 50/1.2 GM on either an A7R-IV or A1?
Asked by: Roy
That was not my question! I asked how the image quality compares between a Leica SL2 + this 50mm Summilux vs. Sony A1 (or A7R IV) + 50mm f/1.2 GM.

So aside from the f-stop and the weight, what is the difference in IQ or whatever between this 50/1.4 and the other Leica 50/2?
Asked by: Rona
The one-stop difference in aperture is the biggest difference; optically they are very similar, but not identical, with a similar number of aspherical surfaces and anomalous partial dispersion elements, and similar multi-coating. The 50mm f/2 lens also has a dual synchro drive stepping AF motor.

question

Why is it so expensive? What is the diference between a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 or a Canon fD 50mm 1.4 or Sigma 50mm 1.4? Why should I buy this lens? Thank you, Im asking with honesty.
Asked by: Danilo S.
To me it's better than all the lenses you mentioned. But, the only reason it';s as expensive as it is, is that it's a Leica and made to a different set of standards.

You are correct, this lens was released in the past but actually earlier than last year--specifically October 20, 2015.
