Venus Optics 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A truly wide-angle prime featuring a rectilinear optical design, the black Nikon F-mount Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D from Venus Optics is specifically meant to limit distortion for clear and accurate portrayals of landscapes and architectural subjects. The optical construction also incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and reduced color fringing. A Frog Eye Coating has been applied, too, to repel dust and moisture from the front element of the lens to benefit working in trying environmental conditions. Benefitting the optical attributes, this lens also features a precise manual focus design along with a floating optical system to maintain accurate rendering throughout the focus range, from 7.09" to infinity. Additionally, a petal-shaped lens hood is also incorporated into the lens' design to reduce flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Ultra wide-angle prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, this 12mm f/2.8 can also be used with DX models where it provides an 18mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low and difficult lighting conditions.
Rectilinear design renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality. Two aspherical elements are also featured to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.
A Frog Eye Coating has been applied to repel both dust and moisture for added protection when working in inclement conditions.
Manual focus design employs a floating optical system to maintain performance throughout the focusing range of 7.09" to infinity.
Built-in petal-shaped lens hood shields the lens from stray light to reduce flare and ghosting and also protects the front elements from accidental impacts.

    Venus Optics 12mm f/2.8 reviews

    Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Nikon F (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this lens! It's built like a tank. Long smooth focus. I don't know if I'd call it zero distortion, but it's the least distortion I've ever seen in a lens this wide. Lens cap is a little wonky. It's fully manual, but on my Nikon D750, I can use it in Aperture priority mode and the camera handles the metering/shutter. Really fun for very wide long-exposure landscape/cityscape work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Was sorely disappointed. Since Nikon does not have a super wide angle like Canon's 11-24mm, I was really hoping that this would be the answer for Nikonians like me. I already have the 14-24mm Nikkor which is superb but not wide enough. At f2.8 this would be my go to lens for astrophotography! Alas, it was not meant to be. It is NOT sharp at the corners, especially at 2.8. It is better at f8. Heck, it is worse than the Rokinon 14mm at the corners and I would not shoot with it. Yes, it is advertised as Zero-distortion but not for sharpness, corner to corner! The engineers need to redesign the lens. I am returning my lens and still hoping that Nikon or Sigma or Tokina comes out with a superwide at f2.8 that is sharp, edge to edge and corner to corner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best interior lens Bought this lens to do interiors, works perfect. No barrel distortion of most wide angle lens. Focus is manual but on my d800 use the non CPU lens option on the menu and you can see all the setting and the camera will meter. Even focus in the lower right in the you will see when the lens is in focus. Or just set in infinity and go. Amazing lens 1/2 the price of the 14-24 Nikon way better than the tokina 16-36. Size super small little bitter than my Nikon 16mm fisheye. Built to last. Focus ring and aperture super smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly excellent glass! If you need really wide, this is your lens. Quite sharp and almost no barrel distortion! Definitely a special purpose piece of gear, but well worth the $ (again, if you need it).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from VERY SHARP WITH STRAIGHT LINES! The Laowa is exceptionally sharp in most of the picture with the corners falling off at big apertures. Corners get much better at F8.. This is my second copy (first was blurry in corners). I originally reported blurry corners in my 2nd lens review. Laowa saw my original review and emailed questions to diagnose the lens. I learned from them that corners far out of the plane of focus (90 degrees off-or right angles) will show sharpness fall off and this is common with very wide lenses. To summarize: Do not expect the bottom of your shot, such as your feet, to be in focus when farther objects (like buildings) are clear, even if the depth of field scales show it should be in focus. The Laowa renders straight lines and little distortion as long as the camera is level. You will still get stretching of the sides of the image, common to all wide lenses.Vignetting is strong wide open, them gets better a few stops down. Remember, this is a manual lens with no info given to the camera. Auto corrections will not work and must be manually done.Build seems very good...In addition to the removable lens shade, a permanent one sticks out 1 mm farther than the lens to protect the lens from scratches. To summarize, this will be a fun lens when extreme wide angle is required. I can imagine uses for interior architecture and landscape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly sharp from corners to corners. No distortion! The lens lives up to its promise with zero distortion. One of the sharpest wide angle lens I have even used in both Nikon D810 and Sony A7R2. A very good adapter is needed for using in mirrorless cameras otherwise the corner sharpness will be affected by the imprecise dimensions of the adapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says! Perfect for architecture photography. 0 lens distortion. I was using the Tokina 16-28, lots of flare. This lens norne, super sharp. Don't worry about manual focus. Most modern dslrs (I have d800) have a non cpu lens function. Just add in focal length and f-stop. And the camera will recognize your settings and meter accordingly. Also in the lower right is a dot that when it is lit, means your in focus.
