Venus Optics 12mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A truly wide-angle prime featuring a rectilinear optical design, the Sony E-mount Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D from Venus Optics is specifically meant to limit distortion for clear and accurate portrayals of landscapes and architectural subjects. The optical construction also incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and reduced color fringing. A Frog Eye Coating has been applied, too, to repel dust and moisture from the front element of the lens to benefit working in trying environmental conditions. Benefitting the optical attributes, this lens also features a precise manual focus design along with a floating optical system to maintain accurate rendering throughout the focus range, from 7.09" to infinity. Additionally, a petal-shaped lens hood is also incorporated into the lens' design to reduce flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Ultra wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, this 12mm f/2.8 can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 18mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low and difficult lighting conditions.
Rectilinear design renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality. Two aspherical elements are also featured to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.
A Frog Eye Coating has been applied to repel both dust and moisture for added protection when working in inclement conditions.
Manual focus design employs a floating optical system to maintain performance throughout the focusing range of 7.09" to infinity.
Built-in petal-shaped lens hood shields the lens from stray light to reduce flare and ghosting and also protects the front elements from accidental impacts.

    Venus Optics 12mm f/2.8 reviews

    Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Sony E is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect lens bought from the perfect company The transaction process was fast and easy. I live in New Zealand and was able to watch the progress of the delivery, through the tracking. The package arrived in New Zealand 2 1/2 days after leaving B & H, then took another 3 days to get through NZ Customs and delivery to me. I love this lens. It fits on my Sony A7R2 camera and they are a perfect team. Thank you so much B & H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive I've been pairing this lens with my a7rii and a7ii. I'm really impressed with the lack of distortion in a lens this wide and I'm getting great images wide open at f2.8. The compact size makes it easy to carry and really compliments Sony's a7 line of cameras. Solid construction and a really smooth focus ring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot of fun in a small package! After waiting until others had bought and reviewed this lens, I got enough confidence to buy the Laowa 12mm and am loving it. Very sharp and the build feels sturdy, but remains a small lens due to having no electronic auto features. My main purpose was to shoot scenics, night skies and architectural, and would not be using auto-focus or auto-iris anyway. Only negative is that the filter holder has been on backorder for 3 weeks now!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High quality wide angle with little distortion Images are sharp, with little distortion when shot properly. Build quality is high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I will buy this product over and over again. Amazing lens! Super sharp as soon as your critical focus is on point, good contrast and colors, great built and feel. Strongly recommend this lens for Real estate, landscaping and creative shoots for weddings without the barrel distortion. Love it!.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Great Little Lens I bought this lens after watching a few video reviews recommending it's zero-distortion qualities. I shoot nature and landscape so the wide field of view and distortion control claims were very inviting. I have to say that they were right. I was impressed by the quality of build and the image quality. The only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars is the fact that nobody will ever make an adaptor for filters to fit on it. I use the Lee filter system with ND's and grads and that won't fly with this lens.
