3D Astronomy SW-8X42-3D overview

  • 1Description

Built with the proprietary Lederman Optical Array (LOA) to reproduce the true stereoscopic depth of field of human sight, 3D Astronomy's 8x42 Space Walker 3D Binocular yields views of the night sky that normal binoculars cannot offer. The LOA duplicates the physiological process that allows humans to see with depth perception and eliminates the flat depth of field common when viewing through binoculars focused at infinity. The LOA is complemented by phase-corrected and dielectric coated BAK4 roof prisms and fully multi-coated optics that work together to improve light transmission throughout the optical path, reduce internal light scattering, and increase color rendition, image clarity, and overall contrast. Rounding out the optical performance is a wide angle of view, long eye relief, and comfortable exit pupil. A pair of removable angled eyecups is provided to block peripheral light and eliminate ambient light interference with your viewing experience.

Optical Performance
  • 8x magnification
  • 42mm objective lenses
  • Compact BAK4 roof prisms
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings reduce internal light scattering while aligning light waves to improve contrast and clarity
  • Dielectric prism coatings reduce light loss for brighter images
  • Fully multi-coated optics reduces light loss and increases color rendition, contrast, and clarity
  • Wide 60° apparent angle of view
  • 388' field of view at 1000 yards
  • Long 17.5mm eye relief
  • Wide 5.25mm exit pupil
Lederman Optical Array
  • Optical array integrated into one eyepiece
  • Duplicates the physiological process that allows humans to see with depth perception
  • Eliminates the flat view typical when viewing through binoculars focused at infinity to produce a rich depth of field more like natural human vision
  • Produces the angular offset required for true stereoscopic vision no matter how far the field being viewed is located

3D Astronomy SW-8X42-3D reviews

8x42 Space Walker 3D Binocular is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique and delightful I was intrigued by the (1) optical array and (2) whether the 3-D effect was real. I live in Chicago but observe out over the lake. The array is not visible when observing the night sky over the dark lake and is only barely visible- and not intrusive- when turning away and observing over the city streets. The 3-D effect is subtle, but real. And delightful. Optics are excellent edge to edge with outstanding color transmission. It's lightweight and solidly built. For sheer enjoyment of the night sky, I recommend it highly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Really wanted to like Living in Maine, couldn't wait to try these out. Unfortunately am going to have to return. In comparing to an old set of Nikon 8x32 binoculars I had laying around from a yard sale find, I didn't notice any viewing difference. What was noticeable was the operation. The batwings make the viewing eyepieces too wide so that was unable to get positioned in such a way as to properly look thru the binoculars withou pinching nose. Even then they work more like blinders and do not actually extend far enough to reach your face. If you are planing on using them, glue the on otherwise you will be constantly looking for them on the ground as they just press on and fall off. Same with the front covers. Spent more time trying to get comfortable than actually viewing the sky. The build quality seems to be the same as the nikons but the hassle of use and no difference in image for the cost will make these a return.
