Do you have to install extra wood behind the drywall/ceiling due to the x-brace being much smaller than the span of two joists?
Yes. it is recommended that a cross piece is added, to be attached to each joists and 3/4" plywood be used as well as "blocking" to be used to attach the ceiling mount securely.
