Sony MPK-URX100A Reviews

Exceeds expectations

I bought this housing because I wanted to use a good compact Sony camera to capture underwater wildlife. I was frustrated with the GoPro and unimpressive still photos. The housing allows use of all buttons on the camera and functions that allow quality pictures underwater. I have included pictures from my first time use in Kona Hawaii. Make your own conclusions from my experience. I highly recommend this housing.

Best bang for your buck

I shoot underwater for a living, this product is incredible. Affordable, yet outperforms many other waterhousings. Although it is not made for the RX100vii as the zoom stops at 68mm as the housing is not big enough. This is not an issue, as you would almost never use the zoom function in the water.

I read that the O ring will unfortunately not be replaceable, but other than that the housing performed very well underwater. Very easy to use.

Works very well, wish it were a little smaller

The other reviews were very helpful. I found this housing worked very well and was not hard to use underwater. It does float. I would like it more if it were smaller. Overall it wasn't a bad size to use for boat dives and snorkeling. The pics are pretty good and its nice to be able to zoom. I use the RX100 V for faster lens but still have a lot of blurry images. The flash didn't seem to help but may be good for deeper dives. I wish there were an o-ring service kit or even an option to buy the main o-ring for a spare.

Read if you're comparing between this and ikelite

I have had the chance to try this with extra flash light . The results are ok . They said you can use all the features of the camera however that's not true. The selection wheel (most important thing) can't be used. Therefore you can't shoot manual as u can't change the shutter speed or aperture. You can use the camera on shutter priority . Or auto or Aperture . Yet this is still good for videos. It floats in salty water. And you can use the flash to trigger other flashes. I do think this is still better than ikelite housing as the other can't be used to trigger flashes without fiber cords.

Does everything that is needed

I used it for a week snorkeling in Hawaii. No problems. Overall good experience. Need to set the display brightness to "Sunny day". I used Shutter priority mode to make sure shutter speed is at least 1/250 or faster.

Leak issue but NOT mine

I know there are lots of rumor of this product for leaking. But thankfuly not mine. If you take care of O-ring with silicone grease properly, this should not be an issue. I know there are more high-end product from Nauticam or Ikelite but this one does its job for the cheaper price.

The RX 100 II has a longer zoom, will this housing work with the built in zoom, and still use it to its longest zoom ?

The Sony Underwater Housing for RX100-Series Cameras is designed so you could use the full zoom range on all RX100 cameras. Keep in mind it is best to use the wide-angle part of the zoom underwater.

Download the manual(B&H prohibits links) for the Water Housing from esupport DOT sony DOT com and search for the term AG-R1 or AG-R2. This will show you the part you need to remove from the housing to make your camera fit.

question

The RX100VI has Under Water White Balance. I am worried the lens would extend into the end of the UW Housing and damage the camera. Perhaps lens length could be limited when UW W Bal is selected?
