Sporting a distinctive large aperture and deep light bucket, the Explore Scientific FirstLight 203mm f/6 Alt-Az Dobsonian Telescope gives users powerful performance at a reasonable price. Its large parabolic primary and smaller secondary mirrors are made from low-expansion glass to eliminate distortion across the entire field of view, especially at the edges, while allowing sharp resolution of star clusters and nebulae that smaller apertures cannot achieve.

The fast f/6 focal ratio and hexagonal rack-and-pinion focuser make this an ideal choice for imaging, by enabling shorter exposure times with the ability to achieve tack-sharp focusing with the strength to handle large imaging rigs and eyepieces. This 2.5" focuser is designed to eliminate vignetting when using large wide-field eyepieces when observing, and when using large imaging sensors for astrophotography. Reducer adapters are included allowing the use of both 1.25" and larger 2" eyepieces and accessories.

The heavy base provides a rock-steady platform with very low vibrations. This alt-az rocker mount features Teflon pads on the ground plate, and large altitude wheels for smooth and easy movement along both axes with little vibration. Dual mounting rings allow the OTA to be precisely balanced for even smoother movement, and the altitude wheels can be removed and replaced with a Losmandy-style dovetail plate so the OTA can be used with EQ and GoTo mounts mounted on large tripods or piers.

Optical Tube
  • 203mm (8") aperture
  • f/6 focal ratio
  • 1218mm focal length
  • Optical design: Dobsonian-variant of a Newtonian reflector
  • Low-expansion H-PZ33 glass primary mirror
  • 57mm low thermal-expansion Borosilicate glass secondary mirror resists expansion to limit aberrations
  • Resolution: 0.6 arcsec
Mount
  • Alt-az rocker design
  • Large aluminum altitude wheels allow for smooth movement and tracking with reduced vibration
  • Teflon pads on ground plate enable smooth 360° rotation
  • Adjustable mounting rings enable precision balancing when using lighter or heavier accessories for smoother motion
  • Mounting rings allow the altitude wheels to be removed and replaced with a Losmandy-style dovetail for attachment to an EQ, alt-az, or GoTo mount head for tripod/pier use
Focuser
  • Large 2.5" hexagonal rack-and-pinion design
  • Provides strength and rigidity to handle heavy eyepieces and imaging rigs with little backlash, tilt, or shifting
  • Large drawtube prevents vignetting with wide-field eyepieces during observation, or when using large imaging sensors for astrophotography
  • Includes 2" and 1.25" eyepiece adapters to allow use of a variety of eyepieces and accessories
Included Accessories
    Super Plössl eyepiece:
  • 1.25" diameter barrel
  • 25mm yields 49x power
    Finderscope:

Good scope

This is my first scope and am very happy with it. Not a fan of how the base assembles but it is sturdy after I applied glue to the joints. Tool-less mirror collimating is very handy. The red dot finder works well but kind of wish the brightness could go down a bit more. Unless you’re pointing at the moon, you can’t see anything but the dot in the viewfinder. Views are clear and after a little practice, easy to point and get on target. Looking forward to many nights observing with it.

With this excellent 8 dobsonian telescope I can see the color bands of planet jupiter and I can see clearly the rings of planet saturn and I even saw pluto, and I been taking super clear pictures of the clusters of stars with my samsung galaxy and now I feel like I have an observatory in my house, thank you B&H.

This telescope it’s just great. I’m a beginner and after several weeks of research; I take the choice to buy this and brin it to my country, Colombia, so can you imagine all the things I had to have in mind...first than nothing It’s huge !!! Second it’s beautiful; I’m a industrial designer and the high end of this product it’s a great, the materials and the details look so nice. The assembly was easy, the up and down system/design is soft, and keep the balance; the only thing maybe you have to do, it’s to re- install the white pieces where the traction happen... this because the employees maybe made an a fast installation and they look crooked, so maybe you have to remove them and put them back correctly ... one of the screw was no deeply, so this generate a track in the tread, very important check this ! The base is very nice and gives an strong support, easy to turn. The super plossl piece it’s nice, I was watching Jupiter and it’s clear ... I buy two more eye pieces ... Meadle 4.5 mm and Orion 8 mm they work nice with the dobsobian. I make a base for moving with 4 wheels because it’s a little heavy. The laser point works fine, you just have to make a set up for a correctly point correctly. I really recommend this telescope, you will not disappointed for the price and the product... easy to assembly, easy to use, easy to love it !! Clear skies !!
