Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a versatile range of longer-than-normal focal lengths, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR from Nikon is a portrait to telephoto zoom offering a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, intuitive handling controls, and a sophisticated optical construction. This revised layout now includes six extra-low dispersion elements, as well as one fluorite element and one high refractive index element, to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and sharpness. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens also features a series of robust physical and handling assets, including a four stop-effective Vibration Reduction system to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A Silent Wave Motor AF system also contributes to sharp imagery with quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that is suitable for both stills and video applications. Four focus buttons are featured on the lens barrel for easily activating AF Lock, and full-time manual focus override is also available. Additionally, the lens also sports a weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction for working in harsh environments, and the removable, rotating tripod collar spins on ball bearings for smooth and quick shifting between vertical and horizontal shooting.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this 70-200mm lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Six extra-low dispersion elements combine with one fluorite element and a high refractive index element to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing, as well as increase contrast, clarity, and apparent sharpness for a richer image quality.
Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements afford protection to the optical system.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations. Additionally, a dedicated Sports Mode is optimized for photographing when using panning movements and a Tripod Mode suppresses subtle ground vibrations.
Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that is ideal for photographing fast-moving subjects.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and contributes to a lighter overall weight.
Four focus buttons are positioned on the lens barrel for intuitively engaging autofocus or AF Lock functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Weather-sealed design and magnesium-alloy construction is able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments. Additionally, the zoom and focus rings have been switched compared to previous 70-200mm models, with the focus ring closer to the mount now for more natural handling and control.
Removable, rotating tripod collar spins on ball bearings to permit quick and smooth switching from vertical to horizontal shooting orientations.

    Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 148.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens by Nikon - I would recommend it to a friend I have been using this lens now for about 3 weeks and have shot just over 6,000 images with it, most of which have been inside sports for Basketball and Wrestling. It's sharp edge to edge, extremely fast auto focus and good color. I would recommend taking the time to Fine Tune the auto focus on your camera with the lens for best focus results. When I first used it on the Nikon D500 it was not super sharp, so I tool a minute or so to fine tune the lens to the camera and it made a huge difference. I did not purchase the VRII when it came out so can't compare the FL to the VR II, however in comparison to the first VR 70-200 lens which I never liked the sharpness or the clarity of, the new FL 70-200 is Awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens is why we love Nikon My old 70-200mm f/2.8 VR , I have been using since the days of film; It has been the most dependable, most used lens throughout my entire professional career, almost 20 years now... I waited a very long time to upgrade it, and boy was it the right thing to do. I found a place to rent this new one from before purchasing, so it really was a no brainer, after using it out in the field for a couple of months. Amazing that Nikon managed to improve this lens, which was already the best of the best (in my humble opinion!) Fast, accurate throughout focal lengths, and works great with the 1.4 extender, so I don't always have to carry my big 300mm with me. Sell all your other lenses for this one - this lens is why we love Nikon...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Keeper There are a number of things to like about the new 70-200mm, but the one that tops my list is simply jaw-dropping vibration reduction. I'm not used to firing off hand-held shots at 1/20th of a sec. @ 200mm. It's been worth the price difference over the older version. PS: Let me add that I haven't had much reason to blow Nikon's trumpet during the past couple of years. What triggered the purchase was hearing Lens Rentals had 10 copies of the lens and that all passed with similar test scores. Let's hear it for perhaps a higher level of QC?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It IS expensive - but with that said - JUST GET IT ! Its funny how we quantify costs. I have little reservation spending this kind of money on a Zeiss lens but from having found so many of the newer Nikon lenses vastly overpriced and underwhelming compared to Zeiss - and yes even several Sigma Art lenses (I sold my 85 1.4 Nikon and my Zeiss 135 f2 AFTER trying and buying the Sigma counter parts) - I will say this...... NIKON CRUSHED it with this lens. The contrast, the color rendition, the bokeh - and as one would expect the fast focusing.... are all exceptional. This lens renders like a n exceptional fixed focal length prime. Now the VR is also insane, shooting sharp images at at 1/50th at 200mm is impressive. No regrets !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Used this lens in every lighting condition you could think of. The zoo, whale watching, portraits, landscapes, beach, sunsets & nighttime shoots on the beach & NYC. You can blur/soften the background while keeping all your subject matters in clear focus. I used this lens with the Nikon D7500, taking all my photos & videos in 4K. I was able to get incredible photos that were very rich & vivid in color. The videos looked very nice & this lens will give you more creative options in every type of situation you could come across or face. I highly recommend this lens to anyone, as it's worth every penny spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best yet. I have worked with pro photographers for several years and seen them using earlier versions of this lens. As my own photography reached pro level I decided to give myself the opportunity to reach higher levels of performance, and bought this new version of the 70-200 lens. I have owned and used many cameras and different lenses, but this one is right out of the top drawer. Superb clarity speed and build quality, a joy to use and a versatile tool for a wide range of shots. This lens will let me test myself, find out how far I can really go. I accept the challenge!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing new lens. I've been waiting to purchase a 70-200 for my D750 -- and I'm glad I waited for this one! Amazing glass. I've been shooting concerts, portraits, and wildlife for over a month now. Stunning image quality and beautiful rendering of color and bokeh. Sharpness off the charts corner to corner, even wide open. VR is insane - I can handhold down to 1/5 - 1/10 @ 200m with a still subject. If you can afford it, buy it and you'll be ecstatic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made in Japan.... Nice! Great lens. As far as the cost, it is all about you. If you are comfortable with spending this kind of money, you will not be disappointed. You dont have to worry about your gear. You can trust that you are in control and the nothing will get in your way. Just take pictures. If that is worth something to you, then you can justify this lens. Otherwise, $3k is a lot of money, and value is questionable. AF is super fast, focuses nice and close. Zoom/Focus ring location was a non-issue for me.
