Acratech 1190 overview

  • 1Description

The Nomad Ball Head from Acratech is a lightweight and durable ball head designed to accompany the active outdoor photographer wherever the road or trail may take them. It's unique "open" design and black anodized coating have been specifically engineered to allow dust, dirt, moisture, and debris to pass through or around the mechanism, preventing damage or jamming.

Both the ball and chassis are constructed from durable, yet lightweight aluminum alloy, which allows the head to weigh just 0.9 lb while supporting up to 25 lb. It features a 3-knob control scheme in which one knob controls the ball lock, the second controls friction adjustment, and the third knob at the base both locks and unlocks the 360° independent pan.

The head's top clamp features a simple twist-knob design for locking an Arca-type compatible quick release plate in place, and also utilizes a brass restraining pin for extra safety. A single bubble level has also been integrated into the top clamp to assist the user in properly leveling their camera when in the horizontal position. Additionally, a 90° vertical notch has been placed in the side of the chassis to allow users to place their camera in vertical orientation when required.

    Acratech 1190 reviews

Nomad Ball Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works with Induro Tripods quite well Unlike Peter's experience, the Nomad Ballhead work quite well with the 4 Induro tripods I own. In his situation, in my opinion, had he simply adjusted the height of the 3/8 screw on top plate of the tripod he would have been able to get an excellent connection. With the wrench provided with the Induro Tripod, simply loosen the nut holding the screw in place and shorten the exposed portion the retighten. It may take a few iterations, but you'll get there and be glad you did.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High quality but serious design problem This new Acratech ball head is, of course, of high quality. But I had one problem that forced me to return it. When I mounted it on my Induro tripod I was surprised to find that the threaded mounting hole in the ball head was not deep enough by a tiny fraction of an inch. It would not tighten all the way, it bottomed out, leaving just enough gap that the ball head could not be made tight to the tripod mounting pad thus making a wobbly mount. I never expected this to happen! Very disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy it again The ball head works pretty much as advertised ,however I have had some difficulty in getting the tension on the ball just right because it requires that two screws have to be adjusted instead of just one screw. I question why it was designed with two adjustment screws instead of a fixed pivot on one end and one main screw. I use it with a fairly heavy 200-500mm lens in the gimblel mode which works quite well. On the pro side it is light weight and very portable which I require for travel, therefor I plan on keeping it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Random Fact The thread in the bottom of all Acratech tripod heads will accommodate a tripod that has a maximum of 7/16 (11mm) of thread sticking out. This is more than adequate 99.9% of the time. Very rarely there is a tripod that the screw is too long. On most tripods the thread sticks up about 5/16 (8mm).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Correction Sorry about my earlier review. James is correct, if you have a tripod with adjustable mounting screw (most good ones do, I later found out) this ball head should mount perfectly. It probably has a shallower than some thread depth because my other ballhead (Arca Swiss) mounted without adjustment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong, light weight, and flexible. Very strong little ball head that is perfect for leveling your tripod. Very strong and easy to use. No issues.
