EIZO CG2730 Overview

When color accuracy is is of the utmost importance, the ColorEdge CG2730 27" 16:9 IPS Monitor from EIZO has the tools needed for color accuracy and consistency. This 27" widescreen display features a 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolution complete with 99% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space and 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color range. In addition to enhanced color accuracy, this IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel supports a 1500:1 static contrast ratio, 350 cd/m² brightness rating, a 16-bit look-up-table, 48-bit (3 x 16-bit) with approximately 278 trillion hues, and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

Setup of the ColorEdge CG2730 monitor is simple as it comes equipped with DisplayPort, DVI-D, and HDMI inputs. Once connected, the display can be calibrated, to ensure improved color accuracy using the built-in color measurement device along the Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE), for true color representation from the center of the display all the way to the edges. To back up the color calibration capabilities of this display, EIZO has utilized their own microchip designed for precise and consistent color quality. This EIZO monitor also comes with a copy of ColorNavigator software and light protection shields.

Enhanced Image Quality
The CG2730 features clear graphics and structures as well as sharp text contours. Its IPS LCD panel offers enhanced contrast and hues that are independent of the viewing angle. The back lighting is achieved by using improved energy-saving LED technology.
EIZO Microchip for Enhanced Color Reproduction
The CG2730 is equipped with a high-quality microchip (ASIC, or Application Specific Integrated Circuit) that EIZO developed specifically for the special requirements involved in work demanding high color accuracy. The EIZO ASIC ensures precise, consistent, and lasting color display thanks to its special algorithms.
Compact, Space Saving Design
The sophisticated LCD panel has a very narrow border and is designed for a compact housing. Power supply and signal interfaces are unobtrusively integrated into the unit.
Wide Gamut
The gamut of the CG2730 includes up to 99.9% of the Adobe RGB colors. For example, it covers colors in offset printing at 100%. For this reason, the screen visibly shows which saturation has been achieved with cyan and yellow tones.
High-Resolution Look-Up-Table
Thanks to its 16-bit look-up table, the CG2730 can resolve image signals with an accuracy of 1/65 thousandths. Color nuances and image structure are not lost, particularly in the case of dark hues. This reliable and precise reproduction reduces calibration steps, saving valuable production time.
Consistent Hue Curve and Color
The brightness level of LCDs varies from module to module in relation to the image signal and the addition of red, green, and blue. This can only be recorded and corrected using special measurement devices. For this reason, EIZO configures each CG2730 at the factory with its colors and hue curve. This ensures that a consistent color temperature is attained throughout the entire grayscale range. The result: Color reproduction is balanced, precise, and reliable for the CG2730.
Integrated Measurement Device
The CG2730 achieves maximum color accuracy thanks to its integrated measurement device. This is automatically positioned for calibration and is concealed in the bezel until the next measurement. EIZO optimally calibrates each CG2730 and its integrated measurement device. This integrated solution eliminates production spreads, as can occur with external measurement devices. The fact that the measurement is carried out at the upper edge of the screen makes no difference, because the CG2730 is equipped with DUE and the sensor is correlated with the center of the screen.
Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE)
The DUE in the CG2730 ensures color purity and even brightness distribution across the entire display surface. A chip automatically adjusts for irregularities. While conventional LCDs are optimized at best for homogeneity of a white surface, every hue looks the same across the entire screen with EIZO. The DUE ensures precisely matching colors from the center right to the outermost edge of the screen, where the integrated sensor extends to measure and carries out the adjustment for the entire surface and all tonal values.
Exact Calibration
The ColorNavigator software (included in the delivery of the CG2730) has direct access to the monitor's lookup-table during calibration. This enables the user to set color temperature, brightness, blackness, and hue curve to suit their requirements. Calibration is based on the default set during production and is therefore unique in terms of precision and speed.
Self-Calibration
The CG2730 calibrates itself without requiring any user input. The computer does not even have to be turned on. Once programmed, the CG2730 starts the adjustment at night, during lunch, or at any other defined time. Programming takes place conveniently via the ColorNavigator or the on-screen menu.
Color Drift Correction
Temperature deviations can lead to imprecise color reproduction. Color deviations of more than 2 ΔE often arise, especially when the room temperature fluctuates. The CG2730 has an internal thermometer to eliminate these inaccuracies. It controls and reduces the unwanted color drift fully automatically.
Brightness Stabilization
Balanced brightness is crucial for brilliant color reproduction. Traditional LCD monitors need one to two hours to even out their brightness. However, even then, they are still sensitive to temperature deviations. The patented electronics of the CG2730 therefore regulate the backlight. They ensure constant brightness, regardless of the operating times and temperature.
True Black
Dark tones on LCD monitors in poorly lit rooms can appear blurry or too light depending on the viewing angle. True Black ensures a high contrast ratio at all times. This means that dark tones do not lose their depth on the CG2730.
Digital Inputs
DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI-D ports allow up to three computers to be connected at the same time. Users can switch between the interfaces automatically or manually. HDMI signals from HD cameras can be viewed directly on the CG2730 using the HDMI and DisplayPort ports.
USB Hub
An integrated USB hub (Ver. 3.0) is provided for the connection of peripheral devices. For example, a keyboard and mouse can be connected to the monitor. The CG2730 has two upstream ports, enabling devices connected to the monitor to be used alternately with two computers. One of the three downstream ports can be used as a high-speed battery charging port.
HDMI
The monitor offers the standard resolutions and image refresh rates for video production. HDMI signals (YUV and RGB) are supported with refresh rates of 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 Hz. The monitor also features I/P conversion. The CG2730 can be conveniently used in video editing and animation systems, too.
10-bit Color Depth
The CG2730 has a DisplayPort and an HDMI port, in addition to the DVI interface. The ports have a 10-bit color resolution in combination with the frame rate control (FRC). The monitor can therefore display even the smallest of tonal gradations with a billion colors. However, you need to have the corresponding application software and graphics board that provide 10- bit support.

Plugged this monitor in, used the color navigator software to calibrate it and it's been working like a champ. I love it. I replaced my 11 year old apple cinema display with it, and it's perfect. Great choice.

Review of Eizo CG2730 27 monitor

I have been using the Eizo CG2730 monitor now for about two weeks. I purchased it specifically for photo editing, especially in the Adobe RGB ’98 color space. Delivery from B&H was swift. The included documentation didn’t include a warranty card, but I was able to register it online at the Eizo site.    So far, the monitor performs very well despite my 2013 MacBook Pro. My MacBook’s graphics card struggles mightily to handle this super monitor. Editing in Lightroom is dramatically slower, and the laptop runs hot trying to keep up with the monitor’s demands. The monitor is engineered for 10-bit color depth, but, alas, my computer can only handle 8-bit (thanks Apple!).     Nevertheless, the monitor is great. Being able to finally process photos to match Adobe RGB 1998 printing is incredible. The monitor came with a CD of user manuals and software, but don’t use these. The Eizo website has the most up-to-date color calibration software and user guides. Download these. The monitor came color-corrected from the factory (and included a color space spec sheet on that), but I also used the built-in calibrator and ColorNavigator 7 software. I noticed no visual difference between the factory calibration and the new calibration.     The built-in calibrator is a dream to use, and fast in Standard Mode. The button controls and menu structure on the monitor are logical and easy to learn. As well, the detachable monitor hood works great, and improves viewing the screen in bright ambient light. The finish on the monitor case could be a little better for such an expensive monitor (hence the four stars). But it’s the color correctness in multiple color spaces, and the built-in calibrator that really shine. Don’t know how I lived without it for so long!

I bought this to go w/Mac Pro for photo editing. Calibrating W/Spyder5 Elite. Best monitor l've used. Eizo is simply the best for picture editing. Also recommend getting the shade. I've done business W/B&H for 30 years & wouldn't even think of going anywhere else! THX again guys!

I would buy this again if I wasn't retired on a fixed income

The Eizo cs2730 does everything I had hoped for. I already owned an xrite i1 calibration tool. Thus the fact that they all played together was a real win. Imagine that, two high tech gadgets from separate vendors that actually work well together. My goal was to get a high quality full RGB gamut review screen. EIZO does that.. I do macro flower photography and always look for some equipment excuse as to why I didn't get what I thought I shot. One more excuse goes by the wayside. I feel good every time I sit in front of this monitor. Another plus, I am currently writing a few thousand lines of Python script. The screen rotation feature makes for a deeper view while doing code development.

Always a sound investment

I'm looking at two color accurate monitors for photo editing in Adobe RGB '98 on my 2013 (early version) MacBook Pro. The monitors are the Eizo CG2730 and NEC PA271Q-BK. Question 1: Are there any connection problems between my 2013 MacBook Pro and either monitor? My Mac has 2 USB 3 ports and 1 HDMI, and 2 Thunderbolt ports. It appears that both monitors will connect fine with their USB 3.1 ports? Question 2: Which port would be better to use, USB 3.1 or the HDMI, and is one connection faster than the other?
Asked by: Charles
You will be able to use either monitor. For a connection you will want to use HDMI.

question

What are the main differences between CG2730 and CG277? Main area of work is Photoshop / Hasselblad
Asked by: Michael
The main difference is the response time. Our CG277-BK has a faster response time (6 ms) compared to (13 ms) on the CG2730-BK. CG277-BK is a more beneficial monitor to have if any video editing is being done on the monitor. There will be faster transition times when playing a video being edited with a lower response time. If theyre only editing photographs, with no video work, then we recommend the CG2730-BK. The CG2730-BK has better black levels at 1500:1 than the CG277-BK (1000:1) due to it being a newly released monitor. Brightness levels are 350 cd/m2 on CG2730-BK and 300 cd/m2 on CG277-BK.

Can plug this monitor into a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015). Do I need an additional cord?
Asked by: Jana
The iMac can simultaneously support the internal display at full native resolution and either a single external 5120x2880 dual-cable external display or two external 4096x2160 displays. The iMac is equipped with two Thunderbolt 2 ports. Thunderbolt 2 is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI). It also can support other peripherals that use the Thunderbolt 2 standard.
