Manfrotto MKELEB5BK-BH overview

  • 1Description

The black Element Big from Manfrotto is a mid-range aluminum travel tripod designed for use with DSLRs, mirrorless, and compact cameras.

Featuring a "fold up" 5-section traveler design, the Element Big is capable of collapsing down to just 16.3", making it ideal for storage in a suitcase or backpack. But don't let its compact size fool you, this tripod is capable of reaching a maximum height of 57.1", a minimum working height of 15.9", and can support up to 17.6 lb while weighing just 3.5 lb.

With a focus on special features and ease-of-use, the Element Big series features a few special design features that make it a versatile accessory for any image maker. First, the tripod utilizes rubber-coated twist locks which help to maintain an overall slim profile and allow for quick set-up and break-down. Secondly, the Element features a detachable leg which attaches to the center column to form a monopod, a great feature for travelers who may encounter locations and venues where tripods are not permitted but monopods are. Third, each leg features three independent leg positions which are engaged by a spring loaded lock, allowing the user to position each leg separately on uneven terrain.

Additionally, the Element Big includes a dual-lock, Arca-type compatible ball head with quick release plate. The dual-lock design utilizes a large, primary knob for controlling the movement of the ball and a second smaller knob for engaging the 360° independent pan. The head also features a vertical notch for 90° tilts, a 1/4"-20 camera mounting screw, and degree markings on the panning base.

    Manfrotto MKELEB5BK-BH reviews

Element Big Aluminum Traveler Tripod (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beginning Photographer/Versatile Tripod This tripod is a little heavier than I expected, but it feels solid. The ball head is very simple to use and it packs easily with my camera gear for hiking. Very happy with this tripod. Finding a quality tripod at this price is also pretty amazing. I understand that there are others who are using much larger lenses or using their tripods for much different gear, but for a Canon 80D and the lenses I'm using, this has been working very well. Mostly for photography and time lapses, but a little bit of video. I don't recommend it so much for video work if you are panning or really doing much movement at all. The head's not made for that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some nice features at a low price in an attractive kit I had been waiting several years to justify/afford the tripod and head in my wishlist. While in an electronics store a few weeks ago, I saw this model on display. Since it was the only one they had, and they would not sell the display model, I came to B&H. (And saved $16). Some of many pluses: Nicely integrates a panorama head below with a ball head above. 5 section leg extensions all work smoothly with quick firm easy twists. Ball head holds pretty well. With my longest lense (Sigma 75-200) there is a slight drop, which can be easily compensated for before tightening. Red and black design looks clean and handsome. Folds easily into nice cord-cinched travel bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty stable, but the ball head isnt good The tripod is quite stable for its size, when you hold a backpack its really stable (anyway i prefer to not extend the last section and the center colum is always colapsed, except for storage). The ballhead is just awful, the arca swiss mout isnt so compatible (for example doesnt work well with a peak design mount) so i finished adding another arca swiss holder, i think i will finish replacing the ball head.... The bag is a bit padded and bigger than it's needed. Just be careful because inside there is a ziploc bag with the spikes, some allen keys and a really useless manual). there should be a pocket or alike for those. HUUUUGE DISCLAIMER: Check the https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194377-REG/prima_photo_phtrbbk_big_travel_tripod_black.html looks like its the same tripod, i wish i saved the 50 bucks...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbeatable value in travel tripods If light weight is your priority, I doubt you'll find a better option under $500 from a reputable tripod manufacturer. Very comparable to the Mefoto Globetrotter in terms of features. And it is nearly identical in specs, with the exception of the Element being much lighter. Pros: - Very lightweight-- over 1lb lighter than the aluminum Globetrotter and several ounces lighter than the carbon fiber Globetrotter. - $100 cheaper than the aluminum Globetrotter - $250 cheaper than the carbon fiber Globetrotter - Spring loaded leg angle locks. (Globetrotter's have to be manually pulled out and pushed back in to engage) - 3 leg angle options (mefoto has 2) - Ball head is 100 grams lighter than the Globetrotter's - Contrary to B&H's description, it does come with spiked feet. Cons: - Basic ball head. The Element's head is basically either free or locked, with no friction/tension control. Also, the release knob is at an odd angle--it is 60 degrees from the portrait notch (most are opposite--180 deg-- the notch, to facilitate one hand dropping the camera into it while the other controls the knob). If you buy a good ball head like the Benro IB1, the total price point will still be less than the Globetrotter, and the total weight will still be a full pound lighter. And if you compare this setup to the CF Globetrotter, you'll still be about and ounce lighter and $170 richer. - Questionable quality parts in the center sleeve. There are 2 plastic sleeves inside the tripod (that the center column slides through) of questionable durability for those who frequently invert the center column or remove it to extend the monopod height. If this is you, you'll have to be careful when sliding the center column back into the tripod. They are easily removable (hopefully replaceable too). Since it just came out this month (12/16) it's impossible to determine what kind of beating this thing will take. However, I have never had a single problem with a Manfrotto tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Travel Tripod! Still a little heavy Overall, I've had a great experience with this tripod so far. It's easy to pull out of my bag and quickly assemble. Likewise, disassembly is a breeze. Converting to a monopod takes no more than 45 seconds. I wish it was maybe a pound lighter, but you get what you pay for - I'm pleased with my decision. Pros: - Legs have enough tension to stay collapsed if carrying by holding just one leg - Sturdy with Canon 6D and 16-35mm lens (3.1 lbs) at full extension - Foam grip on one leg (monopod leg) for cold weather - Easy assembly/folding - Fits in a Camelbak bag (just barely though) Cons: - Probably too heavy for true backpacking - Carrying case it comes with is too big - The ball head comes loose very easily - When converting to monopod or back to tripod, you have to ensure that there's enough threads in both the center shaft and the head and not too many in the other. It doesn't automatically stop halfway on each.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent tripod for general use. While on travel, I needed a tripod so I purchased this model. It is a well made tripod and works okay for general use. Unfolding the legs, the spring-loaded clips securely hold them in place well, however they take a little getting used to in order to adjust the angle. Twist-type leg locks are not as easy to use compared to lever-type locks, and with 4 twist locks per leg, it takes just a bit longer to extend all legs. For twist locks, they are pretty cool because they only require a quarter-turn to loosen/tighten. Once all legs are adjusted, another quarter-turn twist-type lock is used to adjust the center column height and it works well. A small spring-loaded hook is found on the bottom of the center column where you can hang a bag to increase steadiness. The hook could have been a little larger to make it easier to hang a bag with a thicker handle (like the padded handle of backpacks.) The Arca adapter plate that screws into the camera has a D-ring which allows you to securely attach without tools. On the tripod side, the locking screw for the Arca adapter is relatively small and leaves me unsure if the adapter really is secured to the tripod or not. Once fully setup in the typical stance, the tripod is surprisingly sturdy for it's size/weight. It would be nicer if the ball head adjustment screw had more working range (i.e. more turns between barely loose and snug) but ball movement is smooth, nonetheless. The ball head was strong enough to hold my medium-sized DSLR with a 24-70mm lens but I disliked the fact that the ball head kept unscrewing from the tripod. Don't flame me - I know there is a pan screw and I adjusted it, but anytime I picked up to move and tilted the whole tripod/camera, it would twist loose. I could not tighten the ball head sufficiently to prevent this from happening and because I need to move frequently, I feel this is a drawback. I tried splaying the legs for a lower angle shot and noticed how much flex the legs had - not surprising, but something to be aware of should you choose to use this tripod in this fashion. Collapsing/folding up the unit is simple (after dealing with the dozen twist locks) and it fits nicely into the padded carrying bag. One of the three legs is padded. This padded leg can be unscrewed and used as a monopod - a convenient feature. Besides the rubber feet, the tripod also comes with a set of spikes. All-in-all, this is a very decent first tripod for the casual user/traveler. I believe it is well made and should last for a decent duration.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent tripod & monopod. Light and strong. I??m using it with a Nikon D500 and a Tamron 150-600 with a good result.
    Date published: 2017-09-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is reasonable. It is well designed to use on trips and strong enough to hold my full frame camera with a large wide zoom lans (total more than 2 kg). I like that it can be converted to monopod.
