  • Atomos Shogun Inferno 7" 4K HDMI/Quad 3G-SDI/12G-SDI Recording Monitor

The Atomos Shogun Inferno is a 7", 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor that combines 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage as well as high-brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes 4K HDMI and 12G-SDI inputs to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 60 fps, recording it to 2.5" SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes, and Avid DNxHR codecs. The Inferno, unlike the similar Shogun Flame, supports Quad 3G-SDI input. It even supports DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) raw video streams over SDI from select Sony and Canon cameras, encoding it as ProRes/DNxHR files.

The monitor features 10-bit FRC processing and AtomHDR display technology support a 10-stop brightness range, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in presets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remained unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an optional snap-on sun hood is required, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Shogun Inferno features built-in protective armor that features silicone-covered corners and chamfered edges. Compared to the original Shogun, the Inferno now features dual Sony L-series battery plates that support battery hot swapping, enabling longer runtimes. For audio recording, the monitor supports balanced XLR inputs with +48V phantom power via an included audio breakout cable. Additional features included genlock/LTC input, SDI/HDMI cross conversion, and a variety of on-screen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools.

Shogun Inferno with 512GB G-Technology SSD Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Important things to know: If you're serious enough to be reading this review, you already know what this thing does. I won't waste your time. What you need to know: #1 - Total battery hog. Be prepared. #2 - You can't delete individual clips on location. You can only format the drive, or wait until you're at a computer. You must be very conscience of your bitrate and format if you're doing a long shoot with limited media. #3 - Using the X-Rite i1 Profiler requires a special cord: USB to Serial LANC. It's $80 and not included. Also, the monitor doesn't generate test patterns. #4 - You need caddies to put your SSDs into the Atomos unit. This kit makes that much more simple, since it also includes an easy-to-use reader. I already owned a USB to SATA drive reader, and the drives WILL NOT FIT once you put them in caddies. #5 - I hate the audio features. Hate 'em. It's the only feature I'm disappointed with. For ENG go straight to your camera. For dedicated audio stick with a recorder. Overall, this product is excellent. Easy 5 stars. It does what I need it to do. If you're thinking of buying one, consider the points I made above.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sets The Bar I bought this monitor for use on the, soon to be released, Panasonic Lumix GH5; Currently I'm using it with my Sony a7s II and it's phenomenal! The brightness of the screen makes shooting in daylight a non-issue (it does include a hood if you need it). The sharpness of the image and the ability to use a wide variety of overlays for focus peaking, histogram, and more doesn't leave you wanting. The battery system offers a decent amount of shooting time, but you'll probably want to purchase a couple of additional batteries or find another power solution for longer shoots. I've used a wide-variety of monitors, and this one is, by far, the best one I've used to date and will take it's place as my primary monitoring and recording system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does a great job We purchased this unit for a different kind of project where we're recording output of live computer screens with VO from the instructor. We like the fact that you can record analog audio from a mic input. A couple of things we don't like is that it won't record a lower rez like H.264. That would be great for what we're doing. Pro Rez is a bit overkill but we'll use Pro Rez for other projects. Also, the power in the back plugs straight in so you can't lay the unit flat. The plug need to be a right angle. Other than that it's great and does the job.
