With a design the allows it to fold up like an umbrella, the Easy Up HD Umbrella Octa Softbox with Grid from Phottix is a light modifier with a 32" diameter and a large surface area that makes it a favorite of portrait and fashion photographers. The softbox has a silver interior for maximum output and a removable front diffuser that covers its unique design. Instead of being aimed forward from the back of the softbox, the flash head is placed inside the softbox and directed into the back of it. The result is an especially soft light quality without the hotspot which is common with traditional light modifiers.

A pleasant by-product of using the Octa Softbox is the reflection of natural-looking circular catchlights in the eyes of the subject. A fabric grid that folds down to a fraction of its open size is also included. It mounts to the recessed lip of the softbox and tunnels the light forward offering directional control while maintaining softness and controlling spill light.

Easy Up HD Umbrella Octa Softbox with Grid (32") is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nicely made! This is a nice softbox that attaches to a flash bracket's umbrella mount. The softbox is Very Well made! It really does just open up like an umbrella. There is a nice wide band of velcro to hold the diffuser and grid. (Also includes a carry bag.) The design allows for rapid set-up. When mounted on a single light-stand, the angle of adjustment is limited to about 20 degrees. (Not much, but enough for most general lighting needs.) I intend to get a boom mount for this, which should solve this problem. Getting to your flash once it's set-up is not easy if you use the diffuser, as your flash will be sealed behind velcro. I'm using a YN660 with YN560TX controller, so once I've set-up the softbox I can control the flash remotely...and this works fine. However I do have to turn on my flash before sealing up the diffuser and can't turn my flash off & on without peeling back part of the diffuser to gain access to my flash. The catch-lights this softbox produces are...well, not pretty. Since the flash is facing the back of the softbox, the catchlights return an octagon shape that is split down the middle with a dark shadow where the flash/bracket block the light that is bounced off the back. (As I write this, I realize my flash was at about 1/8th power...It's possible that a higher power setting would do a better job of overpowering that center shadow.) Currently, I just fix the catchlights in post where necessary. So, in general this is a nicely built softbox that travels easily and will set-up quickly. However, it works best if you have a remote adjustable flash system, and if you're not using it for portraits where you intend to create catch-lights from the softbox. In summary, this is a nicely made softbox that sets up easily and travels well, but has a couple of quirks that might limit it's use for some photographers.
