FiiO A5 overview

  • 1Description

Seeking to improve upon the specifications of the E12 series, the Fiio A5 is a headphone amplifier designed to be used on the go, and thus, provide a hi-fi sonic backdrop to any traveling situation. It utilizes the same combination of opamps as the E12A, but improves upon that model's components to achieve a total harmonic distortion rating that's 33% lower than the aforementioned amp. The A5 also delivers an improved signal to noise ratio of 115 dB, as well as an improved channel balance over models in the E12 series. This is due to the selection of components, along with the utilization of high-precision metal film resistors.

The headphone amplifier also sports an 880mAh battery which can last up to 13 hours on a 2.5-hour charge when supplied power via the included 5V/2A charger. When charging, the A5 will automatically adjust the amount of current it accepts depending on whether you're using a computer's USB port, a tablet charger, or a cell phone charger. An LED will keep you abreast of the A5's charging status.

Furthermore, the 3.5mm headphone jack utilizes a CNC stainless steel ring, rather than copper, which was used in previous models. This, combined with a plastic ring, ensures the termination port is integrated with no gaps whatsoever, giving you a sturdier connection for your headphones. The amp accepts signal through a 3.5mm jack located near the headphone jack, and features a switch that allows you to adjust between high and low gain settings.

    FiiO A5 reviews

A5 Portable Headphone Amplifier is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Product Not As Expected I Had The Fiio E12, & Thought This Would Be An Upgrade/Replacement ( My E12 Had Gotten Lost ) Though The A5 Seems Less Of An Upgrade & More Of A Step Back In Amplification Power. I Had Looked At Both The E12 & A5 Specs, & This Is Supposed To Be A Mix Of The E12 & The E12A. The Matter Is This Has Too Much Power So IEM's Are Over Driven, & Over/On Ears Are Somewhat Not Needed Within A 32 Ohm Impedance. I Can Say This Mixed With Audeze EL-8 Closed Or Open Back Headphones, Are A Great Match, They Are A 32 Ohm, But They Are A Planar Magnetic Headphone, So In My Testing The Have A Lower Sound On Mobile Devices. I Have A Review On Those Headphones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Transparent, powerful, and sounds better than my DX80's amp Transparent. Great amp, works very well for me. Powerful. The battery lasts long enough for me (it lasts longer than my DAP's so I charge them at the same time). I have a DX80 & everything I play sounds better through the the A5 than through the DX80's built-in amp. I listen mostly to classical. The added Bass feature is nice for some music too. I am very happy with this amp. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice upgrade from the E12 A Nice and strong; dynamic sound and quiet. Great construction. A good addition for your computer and smart phone for audio monitoring. Adds more gain and richness. A little stronger bass boost from the E12A
