A comprehensive technical and aesthetic resource for photo students and professionals, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, 3rd Edition from Cengage Course Tech. covers historic processes and contemporary innovations, adaptations, techniques, and art. Author Christopher James is an internationally acclaimed artist and photographer himself, and the combination of his years of experience, practical advice, and conversational writing style makes the book extremely informative and accessible. Additionally, its 736 pages contain over 700 illustrations, featuring historical images and the work of modern-day pro shooters, teachers, and students.

The book features and discusses traditional and digital contact negative production, as well as a broad array of processes spread out over 28 chapters. Each chapter introduces the history of a technique, then presents an overview of the alternative photographic process that will be covered. This is followed in turn by a review of the chemistry of said process, and finally by practical and easy-to-follow guidance in how to make it work. James also explores the idiosyncrasies and cultural connections that are a significant part of the history of photography.
