Nitecore UNK1 overview

  • 1Description

Restore power to your Nikon EN-EL14, EN-EL14a, and EN-EL15 lithium-ion batteries with this compact UNK1 Dual-Slot USB Travel Charger from Nitecore. It operates on 5 VDC input power, and features an attached USB cable that's stored in a trough to save space and prevent damage. The USB connector allows for connection to one of various user-supplied adapters, portable power banks, and solar panels. As an added convenience, the device has a second slot on the rear to accommodate a backup battery

The sophisticated UNK1 contains a smart charging management system, which monitors battery types, capacities, and initial internal resistance, then automatically applies the most appropriate charging current based on this data. The device also provides battery condition monitoring, carrying out a health inspection based on resistance at the time of installation. A cell's health bar will appear on the LCD display, which also shows capacity, voltage, and percentage of charge completed. When a battery's health has declined to the lower limit, the bar will start flashing to alert you that it should be replaced.

The UNK1 offers a mechanical reverse polarity protection mechanism that prevents charging from occurring if an incompatible or incorrectly installed battery is present. Additionally, the error message "EE" will appear on the LCD to notify you in the event that a short-circuited battery is detected. Yet another helpful feature is the battery recovery mode that restores dormant cells to active duty.

Built for durability, the UNK1 is made from polycarbonate and ABS plastics that are corrosion-resistant and fire-retardant. When this toughness is coupled with the convenient compactness and considerable versatility of the UNK1, the result is a charger that's ideal for travel, camping, and almost any other adventure in your life.

    Nitecore UNK1 reviews

    UNK1 Dual-Slot USB Travel Charger for Nikon EN-EL14, EN-EL14a, and EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion Batteries is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not working more than 5 sec Just received it tonight, and I hate to be the first one to review unfortunately 1 Star! when I first opened it I noticed a little unwanted solder on one of the contacts on primary side which I believe would damage the battery contacts if battery inserted (see attached photo), any way, I tried to charge an Original EN-EL14A on the secondary side, but after a few seconds of charging It started a buzz noise, although it seemed unpleasant but It continued to charge for more few seconds, then it stopped charging and turned off. I have tested it with my Laptop USB, Original phone charger and a battery bank but the results were the same. It might be because mine is a bad unit, but my guess as an electronics engineer is that voltage boost switching circuit design has a flaw!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It could be a good charger I bought NITECORE UNK1 because I have a Nikon D850 using EN-EL15 and a Nikon Df using EN-EL14 batteries, this charger offering to charge both formats of my batteries seems ideal for me BUT it takes 8 hours to charge a batterie, when Nikon charger and Pearstone dual charger take LESS than ONE HOUR

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs longer cord This charger eventually does the job, but charging the Nikon batteries via USB 5 volts is V - E - R - Y - Slow. Add to that the short cord (2-1/2") and it's just a non-starter for me. Only thing I Iiked was the screen readout showing charge capacity and charging progress. As a Nikon shooter, I can't wait all day for my batteries to be charged, so I'll go back to AC charging.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nikon/Nitecore Nitecore threw me for a loop! Battery says Nikon but not the charger...I've always purchased Nikon equipment over the years, didn't care about cost just quality...but if thats what goes with the Nikon battery then I guess it will work...not familiar with plugging in to computer to charge, but didn't take long...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only Charges one of each type of Battery Be careful. I expected this to charge two of the same type of battery. But one side charges an EL15 and the other side charges an EL14.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A few surprises (pleasant) Car has USB ports, so I wanted to get a mobile charger to allow for recharges on the road. I have a D5300 and a D750, which use the EN-EL14/14A and EN-EL15/15A respectively. The UNK1 will charge one of each simultaneously -- another win in my particular situation. The UNK1 is not much larger than the battery, and about half the size of the OEM Nikon charger. The single display alternately flashes the charge status of battery 1 and/or 2. An added plus is the UNK1 can be used with a USB power pack, so it is possible to carry the charger and power pack in a coat pocket, and recharge in the field. Just get a higher capacity (>10,000mAh) power pack. Most display info is straightforward, but the mAh number is a puzzle. One might assume it displays the cumulative capacity of the battery at the end of charge, but mAh returns to near zero when the voltage reading reaches 8.4V. Charger gets a ding for the connecting cable. It is captive, flat, stiff, and way too short. When stowed in the side of the charger, the cable is near invisible! Once popped out, the cable must be twisted to plug into a USB port. Best solution to minimize stress is a short USB extension cable. It would have been a better product if it had a standard, mini, or micro USB receptacle on the body. Neither concern is a deal breaker, however. Charge time is about the same as the standard Nikon charger. I will evaluate the UNK1 and will update the review if anything is noteworthy. Definitely not pro grade, but serviceable, nonetheless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A merveillous small charger for Nikon Cameras the NITECORE UNK1 is a merveillous small charger to carry in your photobag, if like me you have a D810 and a Df, this charger can charge both format of batteries It can be connected to the USB port in your car or on a small AC to USB adaptor 3Amp you can find on Ebay for less than 5 $ One thing is missing an USB EXTENSION, the cable of the charger is very short and not easy to connect to the USB port of your car or on the AC to USB adaptor a 3 ' will do the job and is available in any computer store

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am impressed: compact and well built Given the very attractive price tag, I didn't expect this charger to be such a good performer. Here's the nice part. It's able to put more charge in a battery than more expensive off-brand chargers. The UNK1 was able to add 400mAh of charge to "full" EN-EL14. That same battery having been deemed to be full by a much more expensive charger from Best Buy. It keeps track of the amount of charge it adds, which is only very slightly useful, but I like the feature. To put fears of charging speed aside, I can charge a nearly empty EN-EL15 in less than two hours. That's only marginally slower than the original Nikon charger. The USB port needs to be able to supply 2A of current. If it's too slow, try a different USB port. It should be almost as fast as the original charger. I like the display. It's simple, bright and informative. Unlike most other chargers, it tells you how charged the battery is. I don't have to keep wondering when the blinking light will stop blinking. Construction is very decent. The enclosure feels sturdy. There's also an internal magnet that holds the EN-El15 in place. When I bought it, I paid around $20. And this is the great part. the value for the money is excellent. Nothing else on the market comes even close.
