Giottos YTL8384 overview

  • 1Description

The YTL8384 from Giottos is a carbon fiber tripod from the company's Silk Road Series that includes such features as a transverse center column and patented Y-tube design.

At its base the carbon fiber 4-section legs are the center of the tripod's design, allowing for a maximum height of 62.6", a minimum height of just 7.5", and a folded length of 21.7" for easy transport and storage. The addition of Giotto's Y-Tube center column also makes the tripod thinner, not just shorter, allowing for a 30-percent slimmer folded diameter than most other tripod's in its class. Its minimum height is also achieved via the use of a special feature, the transverse center column. This allows the column to move both vertically and horizontally for macro photography, product photography, and more.

With a load capacity of 17.6 lb, the YTL8384 is a great match for almost any tripod head in the Giotto's lineup, and can easily support a wide range of cameras, from DSLRs to mirrorless and compact point-and-shoots. It's carbon fiber construction also keeps the overall weight down to just 3.7 lb, a fairly lightweight and transportable load for such a wide range of features.

    Giottos YTL8384 reviews

YTL8384 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Tripod Delivers - Instruction Sheet: So-So I'm an amateur photographer that particularly enjoys shooting landscapes, animals and plants including some macro photography. Approaching 60, I wanted something significantly lighter than my old reliable, aluminum, Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod (which I have loved using for several years). My new Giottos Silk Road YTL8384 tripod delivers on (almost) all of my expectations. It's light and compact, and includes a short column to help me get up close and personal with low lying plants and animal life - all factors that are important to me. So why didn't I give this product a 5-star rating? Two reasons: (1) The center column isn't as stiff as the column on my old Manfrotto. It bends under load. This isn't an issue when the column is only extended a few inches, but it's noticeable when it approaches full extension and it's horizontal. (2) The instructions don't explain how to remove the center column from the tripod (to allow installation of the short column). There's a couple of paragraphs that explain how to install and remove the short column (which has features to ensure it doesn't inadvertently fall off the tripod), but those instructions don't apply to the standard-length center column. Inadvertent removal of the center column is prevented by an assembly that retains a retractable hook at the bottom of the center column). This assembly is retained by standard, righty tighty - lefty loosey screw thread, but mine was tightened way beyond finger tight. The instructions provided no guidance, so I was stymied for a while. I finally discovered the truth after B&H customer service recommended I view a couple of videos regarding the Giottos Silk Road tripods on YouTube. I had to use a pair of vise grips to apply the necessary torque to the o-ring above the retractable hook to achieve victory - and now I'm a happy camper. I promise I'll only tighten the assembly finger-tight when I use it. Love this tripod!
