Marumi AMDND1058 overview

  • 1Description

The Marumi 58mm DHG Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Eclipse Filter is an ND filter with a 92,000x filter factor that provides a 16.5 stop exposure reduction. Its 5.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image that is effective for solar eclipse photography. This filter can also be used to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface has nine multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Digital High Grade (DHG) coating also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.

Marumi 58mm DHG ND-100000 Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Eclipse Filter (16.5 Stops) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solar eclipse filter Planning to use for the August Total Solar Eclipse. Tried it out with 300mm lens and worked perfect as long as you under expose several stops to prevent detail from washing out on sun. Able to see several sunspots on the surface of the sun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works very well for sun shots (and spots!) Just a quick note, I've been shooting (amateur) since 1988 or so, starting with film (of couse). In preparation for the solar eclipse coming in August, I purchased this filter. When it arrived, I started working to find the right exposure of the full sun, which will work well as the eclipse starts, then increasing exposure as the sun is covered. This filter protects your lens mechanisms and your camera internals from the intense heat that would be generated by straight sunlight into a zoom lense. It's also transparent - with no distortion. Order yours today, to make sure it arrives in time for you to experiment before the eclipse! A word of warning - you will not want to let the camera choose its own exposure. Canon's auto-exposure chose ISO 2500, 1/320 at f/6.3. With that, the sun itself is massively overexposed, with ghosts. Photo attached was manual, ISO 100, 1/1000 at f/11... the more orange was after pushing color temp in Lightroom - the more white was what the auto white-balance in the Canon Rebel T5 chose. Great little filter, if a bit pricey for one time use (hey, use it more, do more solar photos, plus another total eclipse is coming along in 2024, just 7 years). Definitely recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eclipse 2017 With the big 2017 total eclipse I bought this filter so I can take pictures as it happens. The eclipse isn't until Aug. 21st which I am right in the path of totality. I have be practicing using the filter to photograph the sun and I am very happy with the results using my Cannon DSLR. I am sure I will get some good photos as the moon crosses the sun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked beautifully It worked great for the eclipse, which is what I needed for. I got great images, you can even see the sunspots that were on the sun that day. I don't see myself using it too much now as I don't make a habit of photographing the sun but, hey, there's another one coming in 2024 (and it's coming across NY so I won't have to trek as far) so I'll be prepared. I'll come back to this review if I am able to upload an image, I haven't gotten a chance to unpack them all yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great filter for any serious solar eclipse chaser! I bought this filter for the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017/8/21. Yes it is expensive, but if you are a serious solar eclipse chaser who travels around the world to catch a glimpse of it, this is a must have item to capture the phases of the solar eclipse in sharp, white detail. Please view the compare and contrast photos between a disposable filter and the Marumi filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's everything I expected. Only used once so far, but seems like a great filter. Plan to use it for the upcoming eclipse.
