QNAP TS-531X-2G-US overview

  • 1Description

The QNAP TS-531X NAS Enclosure lets you create a personalized network storage solution by featuring the QTS operating system and five bays that can accommodate optional 2.5"/3.5" hard drives and SSDs. To access data quickly, SSD cache acceleration is supported, so you can combine the best of both worlds with SDDs and HDDs. Once drives are installed, the data is quickly delivered to connected systems by utilizing its two Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10GbE SFP+ ports. Furthermore, a PCIe 2.0 x2 slot lets you add an additional 10 Gigabit SFP+ port or two Gigabit Ethernet ports to this enclosure.

The TS-531X is powered by a 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 quad-core processor and 2GB of DDR3 memory to run the QTS 4.2 operating system, which manages RAID configurations, storage pools, VPNs, and more. You can quickly extract or load data to the TS-531X using its three USB 3.0 ports along with a USB One-touch-backup button. To cool the components, a single 120mm fan is on board. For safeguarding sensitive files, this enclosure encrypts data with a hardware-accelerated encryption engine. Aside from data protection, it supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux/UNIX networks. In addition, you can meet future data needs by cascading optional QNAP RAID expansion enclosures to the TS-531X NAS enclosure.

Performance with Hardware-Accelerated Encryption
The TS-531X is equipped with a quad-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processor and 2GB of DDR3 RAM as well as SATA 6 Gb/s interfaces, two 10GbE SFP+ LAN ports, and two Gigabit LAN ports. An PCIe expansion slot is on board for an additional Network Interface Card (NIC). The TS-531X's hardware-accelerated encryption engine safeguards your sensitive business data with AES 256-bit full NAS volume encryption, boosting system performance and security.
10GbE and Gigabit Ethernet
Two inbuilt Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10GbE SFP+ ports provide fast throughputs for businesses that demand higher bandwidth for virtualization and fast backup/restoration for an ever-growing amount of data. A PCIe slot allows for the installation of a third 10GbE port for flexible high-speed network deployment. Coupled with its large storage capacity potential, the 10GbE-ready TS-531X is suitable for companies that store massive amounts of data and require fast data transmission.
SSD Cache Acceleration

With its importing/exporting and full-site backup functions, Notes Station supports backing up your documents to local or remote QNAP NAS.
QTS Operating System
With an intuitive user interface, your NAS experience is smarter and smoother. Its modern flat design streamlines loading times, and the intelligent desktop allows you to find desired functions quickly, create desktop shortcuts or group shortcuts, monitor important system information on a real-time basis, and open multiple application windows to run multiple tasks concurrently, bringing working efficiency. QTS supports nearly all devices, platforms, and various locations to bring optimized cloud experiences to you.
Centralized Data Storage
This NAS enclosure supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows, Mac, Linux/UNIX networks. Data, logs, and ISO images of CDs and DVDs can be centrally stored on the TS-531X and protected by an integrated antivirus solution. The Windows AD and LDAP services enable system administrators to configure user permissions by using an existing Windows AD server, LDAP server, or built-in LDAP service. It supports SAMBA v4 and can act as a Windows domain controller, which manages privilege settings.
Hybrid Backup Sync
Hybrid Backup Sync consolidates backup, restoration, and synchronization functions into a single QTS app (via RTRR, rsync, FTP, and CIFS/SMB protocols) and provides comprehensive data backup and disaster recovery solutions by easily transferring data to local/remote QNAP NAS, remote servers, and to cloud storage spaces. You can synchronize files between the TS-531X and cloud storage in real time. Hybrid Backup Sync supports multi-version backup, flexible job scheduling, file compression, and more.
Comprehensive Security Options
In open network environments, business data may be exposed in a potential hack. The TS-531X provides numerous security options such as encrypted access, IP blocking, 2-step verification, and more. IT administrators can also control the access rights of each user to different folders, preventing unauthorized access to important files. The TS-531X supports AES 256-bit encryption, preventing sensitive business data from unauthorized access and breach even if the hard drives or the entire system were stolen.
VPN Server & VPN Client
The TS-531X can be used as a VPN server with L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, and PPTP support, allowing you to securely access data shared within the private local network. It can also be used as a VPN Client to connect to other VPN servers (connecting multiple servers at the same time is possible) or virtual private network through for PPTP and OpenVPN for secure data transmission. You can connect your devices to your NAS and the VPN server at home to access data on the LAN via a VPN Client on your NAS.
Qsirch

    QNAP TS-531X-2G-US reviews

    TS-531X Five-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great NAS for data storage! Built and installed for a client. Filled it with WD 3Tb Red drives. Great so far! Ram installation was easier than the TS-451+. Really nothing to complain about. It does what it is supposed to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic Backup, Configuration Management Hosting, and VPN Box So far this unit seems to perform reasonably in RAID-5 mode with three of the recommended Seagate Enterprise-class drives in it. It's replacing a ten-year-old QNAP NAS that is finally being retired not because there's anything wrong with it, but because it is limited on drive size and we're now over the limit as far as what we have to store. This one, in RAID-5 mode (with possible expansion drives) can hold enough to serve us adequately for (we hope) another five years at least. GigE speeds seem reasonable, even though we're not using both ports -- yet. Not too many of the employees here hit the NAS simultaneously, so the bottleneck is usually the desktop PC's ethernet port, anyway. But since the cable is there, we'll likely plug it in shortly. Mostly at this stage we're copying old stuff over from the old server and testing basic backup on one machine, so network speed isn't an issue yet. We'd like to run a VPN with this box, and we're just now getting into how to do that best. I'm personally a little iffy on the idea of locking myself into QNAP's cloud services and their VPN negotiating tools. So I'm exploring other options. Eventually, aside from being a mail aggregation tool and a disk that anybody in the world can hit over the VPN (and this matters to us, since employees travel a bit), we want to run software license servers on this box as well. That's still a question mark for us, since this is an ARM-based product, even if it has a Linux-ish OS on it. And we're not sure how well the license servers will play with it. We're not heavy media users, so I can't comment on that. We're an engineering shop that uses this for basic backup and as a host for configuration management. (We're presently migrating off an ancient copy of Visual Source Safe onto Git. But it's worth mentioning that a VSS host does run perfectly fine on this box, which is interesting given that VSS is a Microsoft Windows-ish product and was meant for x86 machines. And it runs on Linux on an ARM, so we have high hopes for our software license serving plans.) Overall, I'd say this was a good investment for us, even though we're using some odd features most people don't and touching very few of the media streaming features a lot of people do. I'd have given five stars instead of four if QNAP hadn't tried to push us into using their cloud services and had been a little more instructive as far as using alternatives for setting up a VPN on some other platform. (Hence my only software gripes.) But the hardware itself so far seems pretty good.
