Really Right Stuff BH-40 with Compact Lever C... Reviews
Best Ballhead ever!
My only regret is that I wish I had bought this ballhead sooner. I absolutely love it. Love the sturdiness, but most of all, I love the different size knobs because you can easily tell them apart, even if night shooting. Makes me enjoy using my tripod.
Super smooth
A pleasure to use. Well machined surfaces and tension adjustment allow for precision positioning. A pleasure to use.
Great fit with FLM CP-30
This ball head works very well with the FLM CP-30 tripod. A perfect combination of stability and rigidity with a total weight of around 4 pounds. Decided to invest in this setup based on a review from the Center Column, and was not disappointed. Using this setup with Sony A7Riii mounted on a Small Rig L bracket for wide angle lenses and Sony 100-400 GM with RRS ArcaSwiss replacement foot. Even though RRS does not recommend using the lever release with non RRS l brackets, it still works great with the Small Rig L bracket in my experience.
There is a tradeoff in all of them
I've been looking for a replacement for my 10 year old Acratech Ultimate Ballhead. BH-40 is actually same weight as Acratech, which was my number one reason looking at tis ball head. I like that bh40 has a tension adjustment knob. Is it absolutely necessary? Not really. Panning is buttery smooth, way better than Acratech, but it's not a lifesaver for me. I don't do videos. Where bh-40 failed for me is when panning knob is loosened all the way it wobbles. Not something I want to see in a $450 ball head. My 10 year old Acratech is kind-off rough in panning motion, but it does not have a wobble in panning mechanism. Now if you put a little bit of tension on panning knob, wobble disappears. If you're ok with that than this one is a winner. Personally I'm returning mine and keep looking.
Great landscape tool
Great precision and simple to use
use with Peak Design tripod
good fit with Peak Design travel tripod (with universal head adapter)
Fantastic Ball Head
I can't say enough good things about this Ball Head. So versatile, yet super easy to use. The Lever-Release is so much better than using the old type twist knobs. I love the fact that each of the knobs and release lever feel different one from another, which makes it easy to figure out which knob is which when on a night shoot. Amazing. I'm stunned at how secure the Lever-Release clamp is. I placed the Lever-Release on the right with the main knob on the left since I am right-handed. Works so well. Wish I had bought one sooner. B&H has awesome customer service!
