The BH-55 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp from Really Right Stuff is a 2.3 lb ball head that will support large camera/long lens combinations weighing up to 50 lb. Crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, the BH-55 has all of the features you'd expect from a professional-level head. An over-sized, ergonomic locking knob allows 45-degree tilting in all directions and dual 90-degree drop-notches facilitate quick and accurate switching from the horizontal landscape position to vertical portrait orientation. A separate tension knob is provided to apply the appropriate pressure that safely corresponds to the weight of your camera. A third knob loosens and locks the panning base which is laser-engraved with markers every 2.5 degrees from 0 to 360 degrees. Really Right Stuff BH-55 reviews

BH-55 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have owned 4 of these. I have owned 4 RRS ball heads, 2 BH-55 and 2 BH40. Had one of each stolen from me. I owned 2-3 other ball heads before finally getting the RRS heads. They are the best I have used, the best I have ever seen. The panning clamp is perfect for tripod mounted panoramas. If you level the head first the images fit together perfectly. I have done up to 14 images in a panorama and they fit together with almost no cropping required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made I have not had a lot of time to use this, but my initial impressions are not likely to change. I own a precision machine shop and I appreciate well-made things. As soon as I took this out of the box, I was impressed with the quality of manufacturing evident in it. The fit and finish are excellent. The adjustments are smooth and positive. The ball locks easily and solidly. The lever operated receiver for the camera is the same operating in three positions. The anodized finish is solid and should last forever. This company will be my go to for this type of equipment from now on. I also bought the angle plate for the 5D Mark IV and it too is well made and fits nicely on the ball head. The stuff is not the cheapest, but, in this case, you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BH-55 ball head Like every on else, I read a lot of reviews before making this purchase. Out of all of the reviews this head that was very consistent in all of the ratings. I found this head to be very solid using with 100 - 400 Canon 5D with 2x extender. My previous ball head would work on a lighter set up, but when you went to tighten the ball it would move causing me to guess where to frame the shot - VERY FUSTRATING - I do not have that issue with this head after playing with the main and restriction knobs. With the panning clamp it is heavier then my last ball and makes my Gitzo tripod seem top heavy. The lever release works good is pre set up for RRS base plates (Arca style), and has strong clamping to the base plate. The ball takes some using to get it broke in and then it smoothed up. I suggest that if you buy this you work with it before going out and using it. This head is beefy and sets lower than others, the markings are machined into the metal.. Yes the cost is high and will have people think twice about purchase as I did, but you get a very stable and reliable head, that is very well thought out, and made without the compromises that you will find in lesser tripod heads. I would recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No I would not recommend this ball head to a serious user Not as happy with this product as I was hopping I would have been. I found that the knobs were not in a friendly position for me. Being right handed I was using the ball head for the 2017 eclipse. This meant that the head had to be used in one of the 90 slots. So when I am supporting the camera and lens with my right hand and trying to release the ball head with the left hand I found it very awkward to reach around to the back side of the ball head to loosen and then re-tighten. To be fair to the ball head everything worked well, it just wasn't very user friendly in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, I would buy this product again. When the BH-55 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp is used in combination with the Really Right Stuff Universal Leveling Base with Platform on a RRS TVC-33 Carbon Fiber tripod, you have the ultimate setup to do pano work or video work as well as doing general photographic work. All of these RRS products are top shelf. B&H service was great as always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every nickel There once was a time, not so long ago it seems, that I thought spending so much on a ballhead would be completely insane. Now, three tripod/ballhead combos later, I get it. Nothing else I've owned has ever seemed quite right: it's had creep, the controls always seem fiddly, it's too lightweight, it loosens too quickly, the clamp is awkward, etc... Not so with the BH-55. This thing is just awesome. It's built solidly, is rock solid with even my heaviest gear, the extra-large knob is easy to work with, the action is very smooth, and the quick-release works very well. Honestly I couldn't ask for anything more in a ballhead, and plan on using this for many years to come. If you do landscape work and can afford it, it's worth the investment--you'll never have to buy another ballhead again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps equipment safe. Can't say enough about RRS Very precise, strong and strong. I have no doubts this head will hold and keep my equipment safe. When I think how much money is sitting on top of my tripod it would not have made any sense to skimp on this equipment--- I know the camera and lens are safe and my photography will be complimented by the BH-55. Is it cheap--- no!!! But neither is the stuff I'm putting on top of it.
