Really Right Stuff BD500-L SET Overview

  • 1Description

Dedicated to the Nikon D500 DSLR camera, the BD500-L L-Plate Set from Really Right Stuff is an Arca-type compatible plate that facilitates easier, more stable switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations when working atop a tripod. The L-shape of the plate also benefits shooting in vertical orientation with panorama nodal slides, for maintaining a consistent nodal point, and shooting in horizontal orientation with side-mount gimbal heads.

This plate set features a modular two-piece design that includes both the dedicated base plate and an L-component, which combine to form a dedicated L-plate. This versatile configuration offers the same support as a one-piece L-plate, with the added ability to remove the L-component for a slimmer overall profile, or to slide the L-component to the side for easier access to the camera's side ports. The custom-fit design also maintains full access to the battery door and features two Quick Disconnect (QD) mounting system points for attaching a strap. Additionally, the CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum construction is finished with a Type II black anodizing, a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting socket is featured on the base, the included hex key can be magnetically stored on the plate's base, and laser-engraved center marks are placed on both axes for easy alignment.

Really Right Stuff BD500-L SET Reviews

    BD500-L L-Plate Set for Nikon D500 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built like a tank with the precision of a Swiss watch. I've had an RSS L-plate on my D300 for years - it worked so well that I can't imagine living without the ability to quickly attach my camera vertically/horizontally to my tripod head.? The D500 has a number of rubber doors on its left side that would interfere with the vertical attachment, but RRS addressed this in a particularly elegant way. The vertical attachment slides on a rail to give access when you need it, but it's rock-solid in use. It's easy to clamp/un-clamp to slide the rail, & the way RSS stores the hex-key wrench needed to do this is brilliant.? It's a mighty expensive piece, but it's beautifully-made, works incredibly well, and what I paid will soon be forgotten.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent product This product is well made and solidly built. It matches my D500 perfectly, the base plate is contoured to fit the camera bottom, leaving ample room to access your battery, while the L plate hugs the side allowing access to all the ports through the opening. The L plate can also be easily detached from the bottom plate when not needed, or extended out from the side to allow for cables plugging into a port. The plates fit into my RRS BH-40 ballhead clamp snugly with no loose movement. Very easy to change from landscape mode shooting on bottom plate to portrait mode shooting on side L plate. In portrait mode it keeps the camera and lens centered over the ballhead as opposed to off to the side, where it would become unbalanced on the tripod and possibly prone to vibration or tipping. As an aside, I bought the accessory Magpul quick release sling strap for the camera, which snaps into a hole in either plate that was put there for just this purpose, making it very easy at the push of a button to attach or detach the strap from the camera. I always hated the standard camera 2 piece attachment strap, as it twists easily and is time consuming to remove and even harder to reattach. This way when the camera is on the tripod, the strap can be detached instantly and easily. I do not like a strap on the camera when on the tripod as it is in the way and can get caught on something, possibly leading to an accident. All in all, I love this L plate set and recommend it 100%.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Getting too fancy Since I long ago chose Really Right Stuff for my camera support needs, I'm pretty much locked in to the brand when I add or replace a camera body. That has never been an issue until this L-plate. I think RRS went a bit too far with this model, thus the 3 stars. I do prefer this plate's modular style allowing the removal of the vertical L element, but I don't like the addition of the on-board allen wrench and especially the magnet that holds it in place. Having a magnet in proximity to memory cards is not a particularly good idea even though I haven't had any issues crop up yet. The tool and magnet also add to the weight of the plate and the price ($30 more than the similar D-7200 plate). Not RRS' best effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RRS L-Plate works great This is my 5th L-plate that I have bought for my Nikon camera bodies. I initially bought from Really Right Stuff, because I thought it seemed to be better than others, like Kirk, although RRS plates cost a little more. Then when I bought my D500 from B&H, I noticed that B&H was now a distributor for RRS, so it made sense to order directly from B&H at the same time I ordered the camera. The new plate was actually a better model than all the others, because it has the sliding feature that allows for easy access to the ports on the side of the camera. I put the L-plate on the camera even before I made set ups in the camera and it fit the female plates that I already had on my tripods and monopods. Very nice set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pricey but worth it - great product Works as expected. Only thing so far, and It's not a terrible issue, the safety screw head broke off when I was using the Allen wrech. Contact RRS and they are fixing it now. At the client shoot the L bracket held up both horizontal and ferries on my ball head very nicely. Also used it for too down photography on my tripod

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the high price I bought the L-Plate for my Nikon D500. I had a much cheaper L-Plate that obstructed access to some accessory contacts and the battery. This L-Plate allows full access and fits very well. It is a finely machined plate. Yes, the cost seems high for a piece of metal; however, it fits and functions exactly as desired. This is a case of "Buy the best and cry once."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not cheap, but excellent quality This L bracket is replacing a universal one that I previously used. Though the universal bracket served me adequately, the RRS bracket had far superior features: construction quality, accurate center of lens markings on both horizontal and vertical positions, a handy slotted and magnetically-held hex wrench, and best of all - an adjustable extension of the bracket will allows an adequate space to route side camera cables when used in the vertical position. The result is a very solid extension which doesn't seem to compromise the camera's stability at all. Therefore, when shooting panorama shots in the vertical position, I am able to attach two cables for my Promote Control, without the need for an auxiliary $66 cable relief spacer. That feature alone takes some of the sting out of the bracket's cost. I haven't ordered the QD camera strap that integrates with the bracket, but will in the future as I've always desired an effective way to easily remove the strap when transitioning between hand-held and tripod-mounted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect and RRS quality as it is RRS L plate Not much to say that is perfect, fits the D500 well and ordered from B and H as RRS was out of stock. Ordering from B and H gave me free and quick shipping. I use RRS L brackets on all my current and previous bodies.
