Really Right Stuff BX1D-L Overview

Dedicated to the Hasselblad X1D-50c mirrorless camera, the BX1D-L Set L-Plate from Really Right Stuff is an Arca-type compatible plate that facilitates easier, more stable switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations when working atop a tripod. The L-shape of the plate also benefits shooting in vertical orientation with panorama nodal slides, for maintaining a consistent nodal point, and shooting in horizontal orientation with side-mount gimbal heads.

This plate set features a modular two-piece design that includes both the dedicated base plate and an L-component, which combine to form a dedicated L-plate. This versatile configuration offers the same support as a one-piece L-plate, with the added ability to remove the L-component for a slimmer overall profile. The custom-fit design also maintains full access to the battery door and has a notched cutout to permit seamless use of a remote shutter release cable. Additionally, the CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum construction is finished with a Type II black anodizing, a 1/4"-20 threaded mounting socket is featured on the base, and laser-engraved center marks are placed on both axes for easy alignment.

Really Right Stuff BX1D-L Reviews

Let's do RRS inspection firmly.

My one fits perfectly with the X1DII. However, in the screw holes on the surface that contacts the bottom of the body There were cutting chips. Make no mistake if it is as it is I scratched the body, so I used a drill to expose the area around the screw holes. Let's do RRS inspection firmly.

Great quality, not great SD card access

Fits well, sturdy, great quality. But, it makes it tricky to get the SD card open. I can do it, but I worry that eventually the SD card door will break. If it weren't for the great quality of the build, I'd give it 1 star. If it wasn't for the SD card problem, I'd give it 5 stars.

DISAPPOINTING

I usually don't mind paying a premium for products that deliver more of what I need, but to pay a lot of money for a product that damages the camera's bottom plate is insulting. Unless I am installing the L portion of the bracket incorrectly the design causes the screw holding that section to be forced against the camera's bottom plate resulting in indentations and/or scratches-as one other reviewer has noted. I don't think I've installed it improperly but RRS hasn't responded to my email inquiry. Since I need the L-section I am purchasing the universal L-bracket from Promedia Gear and throwing the RRS in the trash.

Excellent

excellent fit overall and makes the X1D readily versatile - can be easily hand held with the L-plate on - so switching hand to tripod and back is very comfortable. The top of the L only just allows access to the card compartment but it is difficult to see how that could be easier without jeopardizing the integrity of the unit.

RRS is the best in class

I've been using RRS L-plates on my cameras for about 5 years now and they never disappoint. Easy to install, sleek design and perfect for anyone using the arca style tripod heads.

Sturdy and Secure

The Really Right Stuff BX1D-L Set L-Plate for Hasselblad X1D fits my camera very well. It is sturdy and easy to install. I like that it has a self-storing dedicated hex tool included. It mounts my camera to the tripod securely. Whereas I can easily access ports on the side, it is impossible to change the battery while the camera is mounted on the tripod. This is inconvenient and why I gave it 4 stars.

A Long Road From 1 Star to 5 Star

Just over a year ago I reviewed this item and gave it a 1 star rating solely because the set-screw fixing the L portion was damaging the camera's base plate. I contacted RRS and they asked for photos of the damage which upset me off because I didn't really care about the existing damage I just wanted to know if I was doing something wrong & how to fix it. I asked questions on Hassey forums and everyone said the piece was wonderful. I even asked a question on the B&H site. Frustrated I bought another brand which works ok but I always really liked the RRS baseplate design. A month or so ago I again asked a question on the B&H site and this time got a correct answer stating that you need one screw for the tripod socket and another for the L-portion set screw and they are of different sizes. It turns out I had been sent two tripod socket sized screws which are too long for the L-brkt section. I recontacted RRS and asked to buy a couple of the set screws for the L portion and they responded again asking for photos but this time of the two screws I was using. When I sent them the photos showing two exact same screws they immediately sent out the proper screw (but only one, which I will likely lose at some point) and the now the whole thing works as it should and I am happy. It's a nigh perfect design that is well executed so I can't let the one-star rating stand.

A must have!

I stinking love these RRS L brackets. I have one for each of my cameras. Easily allows me to switch from horizontal to vertical and I trust them with my heaviest of setups. However, if you're tethered and using the camera in a vertical orientation on your tripod/camera stand, you might have to get a tether cable that has a 90 degree bend. Otherwise, no complaints!

Are you supposed to use a set screw (in addition to the tripod socket screw) to secure the left-hand bracket? When I do so it contacts and scratches the camera base plate b/c it extends above the bracket's base.
Asked by: Fred
No, the only screw you are supposed to use with this to secure the camera to the bracket is the one on the bottom near the tripod socket screw.

Is this compatible with the X2D 100C? I know that there's some very slight dimensional changes from original X1D and X1D II 50C, so I just want to double check.
Asked by: Geoff
The depth of the Hasselblad X2D 100C Medium Format Mirrorless Camera is a bit different than the previous Hasselblad X1D II 50C Medium Format Mirrorless Camera. It would not be able to use the Really Right Stuff BX1D-L Set L-Plate for Hasselblad X1D.

How do you secure the L portion of the bracket to ...

How do you secure the L portion of the bracket to the base of the bracket? Product photos show using the set screw through the base's slot and into the L-portion of the bracket's threaded hole. Doing this will scratch the camera's base plate PLUS there is no way to secure the base of the bracket to the camera's base because the screw doesn't match up with the camera's threaded socket. If you don't use the set screw to secure the L portion then it just slides around so I think you need two screws-is that correct? Thanks.
Asked by: Fred
You do need two screws. I've been using it for years. Never been scratched.

With the camera mounted vertically and tethered, how can the L-Plate be attached to the tripod? It seems like the open door, as well as the cable would be in the way.
Asked by: John
The vertical plate of Really Right Stuff BX1D- has a tall profile to allow cables go through the open space of the L-plate. Its also long enough to secure your camera on vertical position even though their is only a portion of the plate slide through the clamps.
