Really Right Stuff BH-25 with Lever Overview

The BH-25 Ball Head with Lever-Release Clamp from Really Right Stuff is an Arca-compatible, single action tripod head that represents the smallest and lightest ball head offering in the RRS line-up.

Despite the BH-25's small stature it's an impressively capable support, able to hold up to 8.8 lb, while standing just 2.6" tall and weighing a negligible 7.8 oz. The single action design of the head allows the user to unlock the 360° pan and the ball at the same time, facilitating completely free movement in any direction and locking in any position. The T-style lever lock assists the user when locking and unlocking the ball head by providing a large grip for maximum leverage. The T-style handle is also set on a spring loaded ratcheting joint, which allows the user to rotate the handle, freeing it of obstruction caused by large tripod baseplates.

On the technical side, the BH-25 features a few classic additions that make the head almost universally compatible and customizable. The bottom of the head features a standard 3/8"-16 mount for wide compatibility with most tripod legs, while the connecting stem features a standard 1/4"-20 thread that makes swapping quick release clamps as simple as possible. Also, to save weight, the 0.9" ball uses a hollow design, which maintains strength while adding to the BH-25's lightweight design.

Really Right Stuff BH-25 with Lever Reviews

RRS products are the best

On occasion I've had to correspond with RRS and they were helpful and considerate. They simply make best heads and legs. The BH-25 is compact and sturdy enough for my SLR.

Beautifully made; smooth as silk in function

This is a handsome piece of equipment. If there is an adjective more buttery than "buttery", I'd use it to describe the well-machined form and function of this RRS head. It is a centerpiece of an integrated system of RRS gear, all thought out for compatibility. Expensive, yes: but it is a lot more expensive to buy other gear, only to find out its drawbacks and stick it on the shelf or in the corner. Going "top shelf" right at the start is actually the efficient and economic way to go.

Good product but faulty design

I bought this ballhead as a light setup (around 230g) to replace my ArcaSwiss P0 (almost 500g) when I need to go smaller and lighter. The ball head is well constructed and is simple to use but I was a bit disapointed by the panning design which is faulty in my opinion. With this ball, you have a single lever which blocks / or unblocks both the rotating ball mechanism AND the panning plate. What it means is that once you want to do some panning, you have to make the panning plate loose a bit (so it can move horizontally) but it also makes the moving ball loose...making your camera to lose its position. I am curious about this ergonomical choice...which is illogical. All in all the panning function of this ball is just useless which is sad since I was looking for a small ballhead that would allow me to do some panning when I need to. I have since looked for panning plates that I could add to this ballhead but the weight saving then becomes anedotic compared to the ArcaSwiss P0... :(

This Ball Head is Perfect

I purchased this for my new Really Right Stuff Pocket Pod (which I love) and I'm so happy with it. I've had tripod ball heads that were difficult to move and work with. This one is really perfect. The ball moves with ease, and it's easy to adjust. Also, it doesn't add much weight to my backpack. Yup, I'm sold on this brand and recommend it.

Great small ball head

I have the RRS BH-55 which is overkill for my mirrorless system (unless I'm using the big telephoto) so I bought this ball head for hiking. I love how light weight it is. I prefer the functioning of the BH-55 but for hiking this is perfect.

RRS components are so smooth. This is a great (non-panning) ball head. The weight versus carrying capacity is excellent. Only 4 stars because it's so expensive, but it's a really nice piece of kit.

ReDesign With Panning Base

If RRS can design the BPC-16 with a panning clamp / base, then they can include a panning feature in this ballhead, which would make it a much more attractive purchase item.

Is the BH-25 the best choice for use on a platypod ultra? I plan on using it with my Olympus OMD EM1 Mk2 with a 12-40MM lens. Or should I step up to the BH-30 for this use?
Asked by: Michael
The Really Right Stuff BH-30 Ball Head with Compact Lever-Release Clamp B&H # REBH30LR would be better to use with the Platypod Ultra since it has nearly double the load capacity of the BH-25.

Excellent alternative. First it's quicker. Second, you don't have the protruding knob. But in final function mode, either one will do the job.
