  • Max Height: 3.7"
  • 90-Degree Notch for Portrait Orientation
  • Separate Tension Control Knob
The BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp from Really Right Stuff is a 23.6 oz mid-sized ball head that will support camera-lens combinations weighing up to 18 lb. Crafted from aluminum and stainless steel, the BH-40 has all of the features you'd expect from a professional-level head. An over-sized, ergonomic locking T-knob allows 45-degree tilting in all directions and a 90-degree drop-notch facilitates quick and accurate switching from the horizontal landscape position to vertical portrait orientation. A separate tension knob is provided to apply the appropriate pressure that safely corresponds to the weight of your camera. A third knob loosens and locks the panning base which is laser-engraved with markers every 2.5 degrees from 0 to 360 degrees. This version of the head has a special panning quick release with a bubble level and 360 degree markers that make it ideal for panoramas.

Hi, Im using Nikon z9 + Nikon 800mm f/6.3. is the panning option will work well for videos? or it will to hard to pan gently?
Asked by: Aviel
The Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp doesn't have panning fluid and counter balance so it is hard to pan gently during video. I would recommend a fluid head for panning during video such as this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1470943-REG

For the BH-40 with Full lever panning clamp, is it the new R-mount version from RRS?
Asked by: Nhan
No, the Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp does not have the R mount. R-Mount Interface: R-Mount’s rosette will prevent twisting at the coupling point between the ARC-LR and RRS head over time, and will assist in eliminating “play” that results from regular use on our earlier tongue-and-groove designs. It is not out yet as of today on the B&H system. And is only in a clamp and not yet on the heads.

Question. I handle the camera body with my right hand while it's on the tripod. On the RRS BH40 the main lever is also on the right side...unless you turn it so the notch is in the front, but then you can't tilt the camera up, using that notch. If that makes any sense, is there a way to have the notch facing me and the main lever on the left side?
Asked by: robert
Unfortunately, the notch and knob position are fixed. You will not be able to reposition/orientate one without the other.

What is the purpose of the BH40 without a platform?
Asked by: Mark
The first BH40 I bought had the platform to mount an alternate camera clamp too. Now that the BH40 is sold without the platform (and platforms as a separate part are discontinued) it would be difficult to get a solid mount with an alternate mount sitting on the two key posts that lock into the missing platform. Without the platform the BH40 is not usable.

I'm considering the no clamp version of the BH-40 ...

I'm considering the no clamp version of the BH-40 but the picture shows a toothed attachment point from the ball head to the clamp and my existing clamp that came with a BH-55 has a slot, not teeth for positive alignment. Is my clamp not a match for the BH-40 without a clamp?
Asked by: William
According to Really Right Stuff, the toothed grooves on the Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head with Full Size Screw-Knob Clamp are the new "Rosette" pattern to which they have now updated their new ball heads and clamps. If your clamp has the older slot style notch on its base, you may purchase the Really Right Stuff Ball Head Rosette Adapter, B&H # RERRS9000001 • MFR # RRS-9000001, as an adapter for your usage needs.
