Really Right Stuff PG-01 LR Overview

The PG-01 Compact Pano-Gimbal Head from Really Right Stuff is an ultra-portable, lightweight tripod head offered in numerous configurations depending on the needs of the user. This version is considered the "base" model and is equipped with an Arca-type lever-release clamp.

Designed as both a panoramic and gimbal head, the PG-01 is recommended for users wishing to capture single or multi-row panoramas with non-collared lenses. It can also be used as a small gimbal support for cameras with medium telephoto lenses, or in layman's terms, lenses no larger than a traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. With a load capacity of 8 lb, Really Right Stuff suggests using this head exclusively for mirrorless cameras or small DSLR's; users with larger gear should consider similar heads with higher weight capacities.

The PG-01's design consists of two arms that control the rotation and swing of the cameras position. The base arm is connected directly to the integrated base rotator, which features a laser-engraved 360° scale for accurate positioning when capturing single or multi-row panoramas. The vertical arm, which mounts to the base arm via Arca-type clamp, may be positioned with the assistance of a laser-engraved millimeter scale. The vertical arm also features an adjustable rotator with engraved 360° markings and an Arca-type clamp for mounting and dismounting your camera, extension plate, or nodal slide.

Additional technical features include a 3/8"-16 tripod mounting thread, an Arca-type dovetail integrated into the base rotator, a lightweight construction of just 1.1 lb, and an included 5/32 hex key with magnetic storage slot.

This gimbal head along with the camera L-bracket has worked very well including panoramic shots.

The Jurys Back

After using this with a Nikon D850 and 70-200 f2.8 (about 5.5 lbs) I sent it to RRS because it never released completely so that it could be paned smoothly up/down.  RRS returned it with nothing changed so its clear that by design, when loaded, it will not turn smoothly up/down from rest.  For some this may not matter but I wanted to use it with the new Nikon 500mm PF on my D850 (also 5.5 lbs) to shoot birds but when starting from rest it always jumps an unpredictable distance before moving smoothly.  Too bad because in other respects its beautifully made and works well.

Jurys out

The vertical tension adjustment does not allow for smooth up/down pans when starting from rest. It jerks first then moves smoothly. My camera/lens combo weighs 5.7 lbs. Ive sent the unit back to RRS for evaluation and repair or exchange under their 5 year warranty. Well see what happens. I have many many RRS products and this is the first that has been a disappointment.

As with all the other RRS equipment I have purchased, this head is extremely well made! When you loosen either adjustment knob everything moves smoothly but without any instability. It works as advertised!

Really wasn't sure what to expect, but am very happy with it

There isn't a ton of non RRS reviews of the PG-01. I was worried it was going to be flimsy and sag with a larger lens. I'm pleased to report that this thing doesn't budge with my 100-400G. It can be used as a gimbal head, but its primary purpose is panoramic photography. If you're hoping to use this for wildlife and sports, you'd be better off purchasing a gimbal head.
