Light Little Samson

Not used much yet but definitly surprizingly sturdy and solid clamp for it's size. I screw it on a DIY aluminum plate strapped around a tree trunk and rigged to fit on top of my Sherlock walking staff. Light and simple. Canon 5D and small zoom totally safe with barely any vibration.

After reading the other reviews of this ball head, I thought it would be the perfect solution for solid performance while traveling or hiking. Unfortunately, the product failed to live up to the performance that other reviewers have claimed to observe. In my first test, I couldn't frame a picture reliably because of the large amount of sag (using gear well below the 10lb claimed capacity). In an attempt to correct this, I tried to adjust the tension, but could not remove the tension screw. Using the supplied hex key, I managed to strip the tension screw without getting it to loosen at all. I figured that I had received a defective unit and had B&H replace it. Upon receiving the replacement, I tested the unit and it exhibited much less sag out of the box. Nevertheless, the sag was still worse than I am used to with a good ball head, so I increased the tension (no problem removing the tension screw this time) to its maximum setting by moving the lock lever, per the instructions provided with the ball head. However, the action of moving the lock lever back to its closed position caused it to break off. I do not know why my experience with this ball head has been so much worse than the other reviewers. Perhaps during the pandemic RRS has not been able to obtain quality hardware. Perhaps I have developed superhuman strength that allows me to break metal with my bare hands. Nevertheless, I cannot recommend this product. If you want a ball head that performs as poorly as this one, there are much cheaper options.

Using it on a Platypod

Screws into one of the centre holes on the plate, but it's a bit long, so I added a large SS washer and it also prevents any gouging on the plate, etc. I'm amazed at how powerful a grip the quick-release has on the ball head. No slippage, even with 100-400 or 200-600 lenses.

Great little travel head

This is an awesome little head so far. I've had the RRS Ultra Pocket Pod legs for a while with the RSS - 25 head but it was too big for my bag. I've put this one on the tripod and it packs down so much better with the benefit of actually being a stronger head. I wish it had a 90 degree drop notch but alas, it is what it is. This head is a slight bit confusing with the lever being for releasing the ball not the camera. I'm having to get use to that but it isn't so bad. All in all great product.

pricey, small, light, super sturdy

I use these to mount small monitors, and audio recorders to the top and bottom rails of my video camera (BMMCC). The camera cage has RRS rails installed on the top and bottom, so I can mount lights, recorders, monitors, microphones. The Arca-Swiss clamp tightening knob works flawlessly and is silky-smooth. The QR-style lever for the ball is a bit awkward - it is hard to find the right tension - not too tight, not too loose to make adjustments... But once you get the position set, and tighten the clamp, it is incredibly sturdy. I am not aware of any competitive option, this small, this flexible, this sturdy, this high-quality, at any price. Yes it is really expensive, but the build quality is unsurpassed. Once you have it, you won't regret the price. I only have 2 of these but wish I had 10. Made in USA.

perfect as super-compact monitor ball-head

Made by RRS so the quality is superb as always. I screw the 1/4-20 end into my Shinobi monitor. The clamp then mounts to an RRS rail on the top of my camera cage (so the ball-clamp is actually upside-down). I can then position the clamp where I want on the rail, and tilt it as needed. Note it is not a true ballhead, so the tilt-angle is limited to +/- 45 degrees - but that is just fine for my monitor use. I have not needed to adjust the ball tension, it holds very securely right out of the box.

Tiny and rock solid

Despite its diminutive size, this tiny ballhead is able to support a full sized DSLR, even my medium format FujiFilm GFXR. I use it with my car suction mount, which I need to keep as close as possible to the windshield.

question

How to mount this head on the RRS TVC series?
Asked by: Dominic N.
I just made a quick trip to Home Depot and purchased a 1/4-20 threaded coupling, similar to what you would use to join threaded rod. 2 pack was $.98. Works great!
