SAFETY FIRST: Observing the Sun without the proper protection may result in serious personal injury, including permanent eye damage and blindness, and/or damage to equipment. Never point an optic at the sun without an approved solar filter on the front of the optic. For direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder, ensure your filter is ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

Building on the success of the standard versions of their Quark, Daystar Filters designed this version of the Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter to fit Nikon SLR and DLSR bodies and lenses to allow imaging or viewing chromosphere details. To fit your camera system, the each end is equipped with a corresponding bayonet mount for easy attachment, and full disk viewing possible on lenses up to ~450mm focal length. A rear 1.25" eyepiece adapter is included to allow the use of traditional astronomical eyepieces. This adapter essentially converts your lens into a solar telescope. Daystar recommends the use of red, orange or yellow colored glass lens front filters for apertures over 80mm.

The filter is tuned to the 0.5-0.3Å bandwidth of the 656nm hydrogen-alpha wavelength with the ability to tune it ±0.5Å from the center line for compensate for Doppler shift or to focus on specific regions or features, with indicators every 0.1Å. The chromosphere's surface structure behaves differently in active regions than quiet areas, where magnetic field lines are stronger, so viewing this portion of the sun provides a constantly-changing observational experience. The filter is powered via a micro-USB port, and Daystar includes a power cord and an AC adapter to meet the high-power requirements of 5 VDC 1.5A. To enable its use at home and abroad, a set of international outlet plugs is provided with adapters for the US, UK, EU, and Australia.

The Camera Quark comes with a combination lens foot with 1/4-20 tripod holes to mount it on conventional photo/video/field tripods, and a Vixen-style dovetail plate for telescope mounts. While a focal extender spacer ring is included to ensure compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, focus and clearances are not guaranteed with all Nikon lenses. Because there is no electric pass-through on the filter, when installed between the camera body and lens, some lens features such as auto-focus and electronic aperture control will not work.

Filter Properties
  • Hydrogen-alpha bandpass
  • Integrated 12mm blocking filter
  • 21mm clear filter aperture
  • Tuned to 0.5-0.3Å for viewing chromosphere details
  • Tuning knob allows for ±0.5Å wing shift for Doppler-shift compensation
  • Markers at every 0.1Å for reference and repeatability
  • LED indicators for power, warming, ready, and fault
  • Integrated 4.2x Barlow lens
  • Lens and optical coatings designed specifically for 656nm H-alpha wavelength
  • Two-element telecentric lens design keeps light waves parallel to flatten the field of view and reduce parallax as magnification increases

Camera Quark H-alpha Solar Filter for Nikon (Chromosphere) is rated 1.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from So very disappointing I had high hopes with this device. I'm used to astrophoto and solar photo which I have been practicing for years. I just couldn't get the filter to deliver any good results. Even with expensive lenses with very accurate manual focus, images remained dull with out details. I spent hours tracking the sun and tried a wide array of paramaters: nothing worked. Vendor support was minimal and not helpful. I'm now past return date and I have a useless toy that will collect dust on my shelf. Very disappointing and frustrating.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Possible defective unit Did not work for me. LED that was supposed to turn GREEN to indicate correct viewing temperature took almost an hour to attain correct operating conditions (using included AC adapter) and then remained GREEN for only a few seconds. Nothing was viewable through filter. Sent an e-mail to B&H Photo to resolve this problem with perhaps a fix or an exchange, but have not heard back from them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs a complete redesign for use on cameras Read the B&H fine print does not support all lens functions. Not only does it not have any feedthrough of electrical connections something that has been solved in auto extension tubes it does not support ANY Nikon AF-S E or G series lenses. G lenses default to the smallest aperture (e.g., f/32), so there is not enough light to see the image on the camera's sensor. E series lenses default to the largest aperture which may be outside the range f/4 or slower quoted in the appalling, incomplete, and unorganized manual. The front element of the solar filter can hit the rear element assembly of some lens. The Nikon adapters appear to be cheap and on my filter, the lens one had an unacceptable large amount of movement when the lens was firmly attached. When the lens and body were mounted, the position of the image was at some crazy angle to the horizontal. On close inspection, there are a set of 3 undocumented, equi-spaced hex set/grub screws on both adapters, so you can rotate the positions appropriately. No guidelines are included in the manual on the critical step on how to process the image. The image itself will be in the red channel and so the green and blue channels will only degrade the quality and should be deselected in Photoshop. There is a limited set of conditions that will correctly expose the image without significant noise and fast enough shutter speed to freeze the motion on the sun. Abysmally poor: Inability to use modern lenses, poor image quality, crude adapters, difficult to set-up and use, my copy had a non-functioning tuning knob (still waiting (2 weeks at time of posting) for the paperwork replacement), and original shipment was missing 1.25 Eyepiece Adapter (quickly resolved by B&H), manual is missing critical information, contains serious errors, and not written for the camera version of the filter. Daystar customer support is extremely slow and poor. Definitely NOT recommended.
