Really Right Stuff TFC-14 overview

  • 1Description

The TFC-14 from Really Right Stuff is the lightest and most compact tripod in the RRS product lineup. As a scaled-down version of other Series 1 models, the TFC-14 maintains most standard features like ratcheting leg locks and a carbon fiber construction, but also adds new features like a reversible and removable mounting stud and a stabilizing hand strap.

Constructed from Really Right Stuff's patented carbon fiber weave, the TFC-14 weighs in at an impressive 2.3 lb and can safely support up to 25 lb. Its 4-section leg design allows the tripod to extend to a maximum height of 47.6" and lower down to a minimum working height of just 2.8".

Quick set-up and break-down is facilitated by easy-to-use twist locks that require just a quarter rotation to unlock and re-lock each leg section. This design also helps to maintain the tripod's slim folded silhouette. A ballast/hand strap has also been added to the bottom of the tripod collar to allow users to increase stability by hand or with additional weights. Additionally, when traveling with or storing the tripod, the entire support can fold down to just 17.2" in length, small enough to fit into nearly any backpack or carry-on bag.

Each leg is attached to the tripod's collar via an offset leg joint that helps to evenly distribute heavy loads and maintain the tripod's rigidity. The joints and collar itself are constructed of lightweight anodized aluminum which, aside from lending inherent strength to the tripod, also provides it with natural wear and corrosion resistance. The collar's base plate utilizes a reversible 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 stud which can provide direct mounting of a camera or head. The stud can also be removed entirely, providing the user with a female 1/4"-20 socket for use with a variety of accessories including magic arms and accessory supports. Each one of the three leg joints also features a ratcheting angle stop that automatically locks into place as the legs are folded downward into "standard" position.

The TFC-14's feet are a unique teardrop shape, which prevents the leg sections from touching the ground at even the lowest height settings and the most unusual angles. Their rubber exterior provides a non-slip grip on nearly any surface and can be used both indoors and outdoors without concern. For users wishing to change the native rubber feet to metal "all-terrain" spikes, a set of metal spikes are available separately.

    Really Right Stuff TFC-14 reviews

TFC-14 Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from TFC-14 - great small tripod! Hi, I've been putting this through it's paces and thought I would share some thoughts. First thing to say is the TFC-14 ooses quality. Many put RRS tripods ahead of Gitzo and I'm now inclined to agree. It feels soooo substantial for such a small / light set of legs. Hard to articulate but think Samoan bodybuilder :) Easily more solid / stable than my G-1257 mountaineer. Collapsing / extending legs is not terribly smooth. Perhaps this will improve with use (I don't remember how smooth my Gitzos were but they definitely loosened over time. I really like how low I can get with this setup. An other benefit to the little size is a much smaller footprint while shooting low. This will translate to actually using a tripod now, where before I would just hand hold in tight spaces (shooting real estate). With no centre column, getting inches from the ground can be done both quick and efficiently. The rubber feet are nicer than anything I have ever used. I hope that B&H start carrying the replacement feet so I can switch those from my Gitzos. Some other thoughts:The stabilizing strap that it comes with was to large for my taste and I didn't like the plastic adjuster. Removed and replaced with paracord which doesn't get in the way @ all. I purchased the BH-30 as well which feels like it was made specifically for this tripod. Small, ridiculously light, but very stable, and easy to use. Well made just like I expected already owning the BH-55.Just awesome! If you're thinking about getting an RRS bag to go along with it, go with Small (next size up from compact). This way you won't have to worry about resting the ball head in the sideways position in order to fit (Bh-30's case). You'll also have an extra couple of inches of length should you need it for spiked feet. Additionally you get extra width should you need it for leg wraps. The neoprene leg wraps I have are "LensCoatLegCoat Wraps 111" and fit perfectly. If you're only going to have one tripod to do it all, I would look at RRS 2 series. This pod is for those of you that already have a largish tripod and want something small for portability / travel / quick close to the ground shots. Overall, I don't think I could have done any better for such a small bit of kit. Very happy!! Hope this helps!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tripod for Mirrorless Cameras TFC-14 is used with RSS BH-30 ballhead, RSS BA7R2-L plate and my A7RII with great results. I use LEE ND filters and normally take long exposures requiring a tripod with minimal vibration. The carbon legs on TFC-14 are wider than my other tripod the Gitzo 2531. The quality of carbon fiber is the best on market and pictures are very sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this tripod My wife has been laughing at me, because I don't seem to want to stop hanging out with it. And yea, it works great...just took it to NZ for 2 weeks and it served me perfectly. Took it on a whole bunch of hikes, and used it in some amazing location. Really well made, very well thought out product... works perfectly with the BH-30.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Broken Received this tripod after so many others have failed me. The 2nd time using the tripod, the bottom extensionleg fell out. That adjustable screw nob on the bottom came loose, and after a 15-minute walk to the shooting location, the foot nob was gone. For theprice I paid, I'm not satisfied that things are already broken and or missing within the first week. I will be contacting RRS for warrantyservice or a return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just had to leave some praise somewhere I've been using RRS products for years and I am not kind to my tools. After half abusing a dozen of their products I finally had cause to send them something to work on. First, I love this thing and it's BH30 head. Incredibly easy to travel with and light of course. Pretty much ideal for my EM1 and lenses. A coworker borrowed this tripod (had her own head) for back packing. Brought it back when one of the smallest leg segments stuck. She has no idea what happened but it was obviously (to me at least) user error. I couldn't budge it and was pretty sure I was going to bend it if I tried any harder. Sent it in to RRS with a note explaining that I had hoped they'd seen this type of thing before and had a trick. Few days later received the fixed up legs. No fuss, no muss. Incredible products, incredible company. Won't buy anything they make from anyone else. Thanks guys.
