Really Right Stuff TFC-14 Overview

The TFC-14 from Really Right Stuff is the lightest and most compact tripod in the RRS product lineup. As a scaled-down version of other Series 1 models, the TFC-14 maintains most standard features like ratcheting leg locks and a carbon fiber construction, but also adds new features like a reversible and removable mounting stud and a stabilizing hand strap.

Constructed from Really Right Stuff's patented carbon fiber weave, the TFC-14 weighs in at an impressive 2.3 lb and can safely support up to 25 lb. Its 4-section leg design allows the tripod to extend to a maximum height of 47.6" and lower down to a minimum working height of just 2.8".

Quick set-up and break-down is facilitated by easy-to-use twist locks that require just a quarter rotation to unlock and re-lock each leg section. This design also helps to maintain the tripod's slim folded silhouette. A ballast/hand strap has also been added to the bottom of the tripod collar to allow users to increase stability by hand or with additional weights. Additionally, when traveling with or storing the tripod, the entire support can fold down to just 17.2" in length, small enough to fit into nearly any backpack or carry-on bag.

Each leg is attached to the tripod's collar via an offset leg joint that helps to evenly distribute heavy loads and maintain the tripod's rigidity. The joints and collar itself are constructed of lightweight anodized aluminum which, aside from lending inherent strength to the tripod, also provides it with natural wear and corrosion resistance. The collar's base plate utilizes a reversible 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 stud which can provide direct mounting of a camera or head. The stud can also be removed entirely, providing the user with a female 1/4"-20 socket for use with a variety of accessories including magic arms and accessory supports. Each one of the three leg joints also features a ratcheting angle stop that automatically locks into place as the legs are folded downward into "standard" position.

The TFC-14's feet are a unique teardrop shape, which prevents the leg sections from touching the ground at even the lowest height settings and the most unusual angles. Their rubber exterior provides a non-slip grip on nearly any surface and can be used both indoors and outdoors without concern. For users wishing to change the native rubber feet to metal "all-terrain" spikes, a set of metal spikes are available separately.

question

Is the RRS TFC-14 stable enough to be used as a primary landscape tripod? In mountains/deserts/etc.?
Asked by: Joshua
Yes. This tripod is very stable. Its usable with a d800e and lenses up to 200mm. Ive even used it with a 200-400mm f4 both fully or partially extended (not an ideal use though). I cannot recommend it enough.
