Depending on the application, two different bit-rates will be available for selection, 50 and 35 Mb/s. This is a license code which is shipped to you. It requires Firmware Version 3.0 for the camera, which can be downloaded off of the Sony Website.

Can the MPEG formate be used for slow-motion?

Yes, you can get moderate slow motion of 60FPS in the two MPEG formats that come with this upgrade. Here is the full information from Sony. The CBKZ-SLMP upgrade license allows the following recording formats: MPEG HD422 50 Mbps (1920 x 1080) at 60i/50i/30p/25p/24p and (1280 x 720) at 60p/50p, as well as MPEG HD420 35 Mbps (1920 x 1080) at 60i/50i/30p/25p/24p, (1440 x 1080) at 60i/50i and (1280 x 720) at 60p/50p. * PXW-X70 and PXW-FS5 both require Version 3.0 firmware or above. (PXW-FS5 Version 3.0 firmware available from December 2016).

MPEG is a codec that is open source and is backward compatible. Essentially, this upgrade makes the camera create an old codec. Any Adobe NLE will open it.
