Sony ICD-SX2000 Reviews

Best combination of audio quality, mic position, and size.

I picked up this microphone for doing voiceover recording and ambient audio recording after reading reviews for every audio recorder I could find under ~$300, and determining this was the best fit for my purposes. The positives: - 3 different mic positions - x-y (for music/room recording), direct (for voice/directional recording), and a-b (for semi-binaural audio recording) - small size - 16GB built in storage - long battery life - carrying case & wind screen included - built in USB connector on the device - bluetooth controls via phone app (iOS and Android) - metal threaded tripod mount  - fairly simple user interface - solid build quality - it has a built-in speaker that works surprisingly well if you dont have headphones to play back the audio - also functions as an MP3 player if you want to load some music onto it The negatives: - external mic input via 3.5mm jack only - picks up on handling noise more than some of the other recorders Ive used - the slide-out USB-A plug takes up a lot of space; I would have preferred they remove it and just make the device smaller - the slide-out plug is USB-A, and the included adapter is USB-A, so you have to get a USB-C adapter for modern laptops - file browser doesnt show record durations by default, so it can be tough to find a specific recording on the device if youre going through multiple sessions in a day Notes: - the finish on the plastic does start to wear a bit after attaching/detaching it to a stand a few times - the carrying case is fake leather but still very nice quality and I didnt expect to get it anyway so that was nice - to adjust the mic positions you need to use your fingers, so they may get dirty over time. I havent used it enough to get to that point, but Im not sure how cleanable it is and will cross that bridge when I get there. All in all this is 100% worth the price for the quality and features you get. If you are looking just for a voice recorder, Sony has a few cheaper options that you may want to look at, but if you want something more versatile this is definitely my first pick.

Disappointing

I have been using the Sony ICD-UX-533 for several years and assumed this more expensive High Resolution version would do everything the 533 does and more. Although not a comprehensive review here are my observations. 1. USB transfer rate from recorder to computer is extremely slow. Significantly slower than the 533. Grab a cup of coffee and wait. 2. Forget about recording using a line in (to microphone) mode on auto sync. I couldn't get the quality and desired levels as I can on the 533. 3. Too difficult to delete unwanted MP3s while listening. Have to navigate a complex menu screen. The 533 has an erase button where I can delete files in 2 seconds with my eyes closed as I'm listening. Not so with this new one. 4. One positive is you can split mp3s with this one. The 533 you can't. However, it will only split MP3s it recorded. You can't split MP3s recorded from another device. 5. The screen does not provide any information, ie file count, directory name, file directory properties etc as the 533 does when turned on. This new recorder you have to navigate to navigate an awful menu system to find out anything. 6. The case feels cheep, as if I dropped this thing thing it will break. Although both are made of plastic the 533 feels more like a metal case. Very strong and better grip. 7. The 533 is smaller and more comfortable to hold. 8. I don't like the headphone jack placement on the bottom, but looks like they had no choice. 9. My primary use is line in, auto recording from external sources. One improvement is the 533 limits number of recorded files to 199 per directory and stops recording at this limit. This new recorder, does have the same limit, however it will create a new directory and continue recording. This is useful in the auto sync mode for example when recording for long periods. 10. For me the 533 is much better, great sound and price. I was not all that impressed with this new high resolution model. My biggest complaint is the menu system. Appears not to be well thought out. They should have taken the 533 menu and improved or built on that.

Better Than Expected

Recording practice sessions for our 30 voice men's chorus in both a church sanctuary and a large rehearsal room produced perfectly useful recordings that were widely complimented by the members. The Bluetooth remote control app made the process extremely easy using my iPhone.

Good step up from the Zoom H1

I was initially worried the Sony wouldn't be much of a step up from my Zoom H1, but in use I like it a lot better. The audio quality is great. The form factor is much better in my opinon. The internal batter and storage are also a big plus. For me the biggest plus is being able to bluetooth control the record start/stop from my phone. That means I can run a lapel and leave the recorder in the interviewee's pocket and start and stop things from my phone, which is great.

Good enough and versatile

It is easy and ready to record anywhere with good quality sound. I also have old PCM-D50 which have to be adjusted gain, while this one does not need any pre-check. Just record. On the other hand, the quality of the sound is still better with big old one and I do not find the benefit of high resolution for field recording yet. Perhaps it might be better with external microphone.

Premium voice recorder, but noisy pres

This is a compact voice recorder with nice features like remote Bluetooth and built in battery. The only negatives would be the noisy preamps and no line out option. However, it's not really a field recorder like the discontinued PCM-10. This Sony is more of a premium voice recorder with high end features.

Awesome kit that allows you to record professional audio very easy. The Sony Rercorder is so easy to use and has an application that allows you to monitor the audio and change some settings along the way. And the microphone lav you can connect directly to your mobile phone and use the built-in microphones in the recorder and you will have 2 audio sources at once, it is very convenient

Great for Videographers extra sound source.

After pairing, the SX2000 doesn't automatically connect with the phone/Sony REC app when I turn the SX2000 ON. I have to go to phone settings and manually connect each time. Is this a bug or just a limitation of the device? This is very inconvenient! I am using iPhone X iOS 12.
