Epson P5000 Reviews

Not Great For Film Output

By ID

I purchased this printer to replace my tried and true Epson 4800. We are a screen printing shop and mainly use the printer for film output (so just printing black ink). The P5000 prints great, but is not accurate. When there is a blank spot on the image the printer feeds the paper forward faster. This causes the prints size to vary a bit, so with multi color prints, it does not line up. To fix this I have to print a line down the side of each page, so the printer does not jump forward. Just a waste of ink, film and time. My other issue with the printer (as others of stated) is Head Clogs. It can be printing perfect, but Detects a Head Clog. Also it runs a ridiculous amount of cleaning cycles. It randomly ran 4 in 2 hours. So Epson, please make your printers dumb again. BTW nothing bad to say about B&H, everything I have bought from them gets shipped fast and is packages well.

Prints keep getting better!

This is my third Epson large format printer, replacing my 7890. There is no question that the color gamut has been expanded and greens are much better with this new inkset. But not only are the colors better, the black & white prints from this printer are stunning. Deep rich blacks and fine details across the spectrum. Mechanically, I'd prefer something simpler but I own it for the prints. It is a very large printer but is smaller than the one it replaced. Fortunately, I had the stand from the 7890 to use with this printer. I think most tables would be challenged by its size and weight. I set up my printer as a Standard Edition by substituting a LLK cartridge for the supplied Purple cartridge. The initial printer setup requires a choice so as long as you have an LLK cartridge on hand, setup as a Standard Edition is no problem.

Epson P5000 -Commercial or Standard?

If you are looking to replace an Epson 4900 and can't find the P5000 Standard, buy the Commercial P5000 and just get the LLK ink cartridge to replace the Violet one before you charge the ink. B&H made it easy!

Master printer for artist and professional

By Helen

I have owned this printer for 1 1/2 years and it sat unopened in the box for a year. 6 months ago I set it up and synced it with my XPS dell 32ram touch screen 15 laptop with Capture 1 linked to Lumix 46mp s1r camera. After a 1 day set up I was producing fine art BW prints that matched traditional silver BW prints easily and color art quality prints that matched the laptop WITHOUT calibration. The RIP software is superior in almost all ways to supplied software that comes standard with the printer. Amazing printer that goes a month without use and no clogs. There is no excessive use of inks for cleaning. I use bulk feed, front single feed for art paper, rear feed and roll feed with different papers from different top companies all without issue. The printer does not miss a beat. This is the 7th semi-professional printer I have owned and for the money and quality I could have not asked for better. After 300 prints there are no glitches. As long as Epson does not mess with updates I am sure this printer will function perfectly. I am not particularity a fan of Epson however, the quality that this printer produces cannot be argued with. B&H has been my benchmark for over 30 years.

Excellent & Versatile Printer

I purchased my P5000 Standard Edition back in May 2018, replacing a very old Epson SP4000. I print primarily on roll media but also some fine art cut media. Recently I've been experimenting with 1.5mm thick aluminum plate media from Breathing Color. This printer handles it without a second thought. A significant benefit for the self-printing photographer is that this printer is much easier to operate at low monthly volumes than was its predecessor. There are times when I've gone two months or more without printing. The new head & ink technology in this printer prevents major clogs even after such long periods of inactivity. I've never had a clog issue that this printer couldn't quickly clear on its own. If I had gone two months without printing on the old SP4000, I would for sure be facing some manual head swabbing and possibly some line flushing to get it unclogged. This printer is large and heavy, though. You will definitely need a sturdy table that's well braced so that it doesn't move back/forth under the print head momentum. I wish Epson had a dedicated stand for it, but they don't.

All Time Favorite: 2 Caveats - Buy Ext Warranty & Use Often

This replaced a 4880 model. Just like the 4880, the machine is prone to clogging if not used often enough. For light use, run the Qimage Print Schedule/Unclog Jobs... feature very few days. Again, just like the 4880, a service call will likely cost equal to the price of a replacement printer. Get the longest warranty available! Otherwise... great prints and reliable operation.

I love this printer. I had been using an Epson Surecolor P800 for several years, and liked it very much. Had some issues with skewed prints, but overall was happy. I got the P5000 Commercial edition to up my printing game and am thrilled. This is an amazing, industrial-strength machine. Great prints. Great features. Love it!

How many 8 x 12 inch prints can I get from one set of ink cartridges?

The printer ships with a complete set of 80ml tanks. Epson does not publish how much you can print with this set. They are intended more to help you get set up and make a couple prints. You would want to purchase a full set to have on hand right after setting up.
