MSI Z270 overview

  • 1Description

MSI's Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon LGA1151 ATX Motherboard comes with an Intel Z270 chipset and an LGA1151 socket so you can build a Windows system that runs on a 6th- or 7th-generation processor and up to three dedicated graphics cards. The Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon is capable of supporting up to 64GB of DDR4 memory chips, six SATA-based storage drives, and two ultra-fast SSDs with an M.2 form factor.

Expansion for the motherboard's capabilities is made possible by three PCIe 3.0 x16 and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots, allowing you to install dedicated graphics cards, NVMe storage cards, 10GbE network adapters, and more. With AMD Crossfire and NVIDIA SLI support, you can create a gaming rig with graphics cards linked. For non-gaming builds, MSI has equipped this motherboard with HDMI and DVI-D ports that offer detailed visuals to your monitors via integrated Intel graphics technology.

The Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard comes with a total of eight USB ports with varying speeds. For connections with keyboards and mice, two USB 2.0 ports are available. To connect with printers, scanners, and external storage drives, this motherboard offers four USB 3.0 ports, which transfer data at a rate of up to 5 Gb/s. With speeds of 10 Gb/s, the two onboard USB 3.1 ports are suitable for transferring large-sized files from digital cameras. Moreover, one of the USB 3.1 ports has a USB Type-C interface that provides a reversible design. Other notable connections include a Gigabit Ethernet port as well as audio jacks, which deliver 7.1-channel surround sounds utilizing an onboard Realtek ALC1220 audio processor.

    MSI Z270 reviews

Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon LGA1151 ATX Motherboard is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good but had issues Pro: Installing it and installing everything on it was a snap. Note: on larger cpu coolers you will want to install the memory and m.2 drive first, you should be able to tell this before locking down the cpu cooler. Con: Installing the drivers. Had nothing but issues getting the drivers to install. Driver installation package is garbage. No ability to resize the window, no hot key for the install button. Basic issue was the screen resolution wouldn't go above 600 x 800 and I couldn't get to the install button at the bottom. Had to remove the GPU card and use on board video to get the screen resolution large enough to install any of the drivers. However, I got the following message when installing the NIC driver. Driver is not compatible with this version of windows. None of the NIC drivers included on the disk would install, none of the NIC drivers from the website would install. I found nothing on this issue anywhere. Ended up borrowing a USB NIC, got windows updates installed. Once the windows updates finished everything was fine and the NIC drivers installed properly, it was just a very frustrating process and how are you supposed to get windows updates when the NIC drivers won't install. A generic NIC driver included with the installation package would have been nice. Notes: Windows 10 pro 64 bit, GPU MSI 1080 card (Had the same issue with the driver for GPU). Couldn't access the BIOS with the 1080 card installed. If I did it looked like the BIOS was corrupted. Still don't have that issue resolved. Hoping its fixed with a BIOS update. Been running the new system for 2+ weeks and everything is good. I would buy this again even with the driver issues.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DOA on arrival My first board would not power on at all, I am doing an RMA exchange with B&H, hope the second board works. B&H customer service is top notch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality motherboard with one annoying quirk The motherboard itself works well. It has a good balance of features for the cost and is well made. The mystic light is a bit of a hassle as the app to control it (gaming app) doesn't work very well, so sometimes it takes a few reboots or even reinstalls of the software to work properly. That's a fairly minor issue, however, in an otherwise solid product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptional motherboard Beautiful motherboard , easy set up. Disk drive not required ,drivers can be downloaded online (more of a hassle). Bios is hard to get around but very organized. Startup screen has the same image as box, (mclaren). Looks a little strange or cool, more of a preference i guess.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent board, could be better with wifi and bluetooth Awesome LED light and BIOS interface, working perfectly under my desk right now. But just as a reminder, this MB doesn't have wifi and bluetooth. If you don't use Ethernet to connect the internet, you might need an USB wifi adapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performance, cost, fitment, ease of installation I haven't built that many PCs in my time (4th one here) and this one went without a much of a hitch. Since my build did not include an optical drive (how many do these days?) I made sure to download all the drivers and apps to a flash drive before starting the PC for the first time. PROS: ease of install, recognized my CPU and MSI 1070 Gaming GPU right away, everything was accessible and not blocked by the case or components. RGB is nice, since so many builds include this feature these days. Performance/cost value is very good. Plenty of apps for gaming, streaming included. CONS: not the fault of the motherboard but in my NZXT S340 case, the I/O RGB cover is blocked by the rear case fan. Its a shame to have this feature unseen. The MSI (same brand) 1070 Gaming video card blocks about half of the motherboard bus RGB cover. Back order caused me to miss out on the $10 manufacturer rebate. OVERALL: Recommended for the first time or seasoned build on a medium budget if you still want all the bells and whistles. If you want to see all the motherboard RGB beauty, will need to go for a full sized PC case.
