Rokinon 85mm f/1.2 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by a sophisticated optical design, the SP 85mm f/1.2 from Rokinon is a portrait-length prime lens for Canon EF-mount DSLRs. One aspherical element and a pair of high refractive index elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions in order to realize a high degree of clarity and sharpness, and an Ultra Multi-Coating is also featured to suppress ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color fidelity. The lens also sports an impressively fast f/1.2 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions as well as for controlling depth of field for selective focus effects. Additionally, the manual focus design contributes to the precise control over focus, and an aluminum alloy housing benefits handling as well as improves overall durability.

Classic portrait-length prime, this 85mm f/1.2 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.2 maximum aperture offers a high degree of control over depth of field for working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. Additionally, it also benefits working in low-light conditions with shorter shutter speeds.
One aspherical element and two high refractive index elements are featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.6' away.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Aluminum alloy housing is both durable and lightweight.

    Rokinon 85mm f/1.2 reviews

SP 85mm f/1.2 Lens for Canon EF is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accurate focusing and great sharpness It is indeed sharp, but the more important is very sensible focusing than any lens I ever used. Color rendition and sharpness is as great as I expected from the lens (Samyang XP = Rokinon SP series). Sigma Art lens is incredibly sharp, but focusing issue in many case and situation, so unreliable. But this one is reliable focusing that made full maximized sharpness in all situations as Zeiss does. Tamron SP lens series is also reliable focusing, but manual focusing from Samyang/Rokinon is more accurate and reliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Boca and really sharp This is all about the rendering. If you're looking for a lens for portrait photography or want to produce images with extreme shallow depth of field, this is worthy of strong consideration. The Boca is rendered beautifully with out of focus areas rented beautifully smooth. The contrast between the extremely sharp areas and the blurred backgrounds is breathtaking. The lens is extremely Sharp, But if you're looking to just shoot resolution charts, you can find slightly sharper lenses. I personally care more about how well the lens renders my subject, and this lens continues to impress me. This lens is not for faint of heart, it's heavy and is a manual focusing lens. Focusing at F1.2 is extremely critical when shooting 10 ft or closer. The viewfinder focusing confirmation is not up to the task for such critical manual focusing. It's best to use the magnified view on the LCD screen for accurate focus. Accurate focus can best be achieved on a tripod useing the LCD screenI n magnification mode. The Hoodman HoodLoupe also works great for handheld shooting. I have mine attached with two rubber bands. This lens is best suited for slow deliberate photography rather than trying to work with moving subjects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beats canon's 85mm F1.2L ii I borrowed canon's 85mm F1.2L ii lens for a while and hoped to buy one. I ended up getting this one instead, and it completely destroys canon's. Don't let the manual focus scare you if you're used to auto focus. The very long throw, incredibly smooth ring, and focus confirmation all make manually focusing easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works on Sony A7 camera also. For Sony A7-series cameras owners. I'm using this lens with Sigma MC-11 adapter on Sony A7 camera. It seems to work fine including an electronic aperture control on the camera body. Same as Canon cameras. I had Mitakon 85mm f1.2 and also have couple 85mm f1.4 lenses. This lens is the sharpest wide open.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoy manual focus with extremely sharp images Lens is nicely crafter and well built. I enjoy the manual focus with the audio focus confirm. The images are very sharp and accentuated by the very shallow depth of field when the lens is used wide or nearly wide open. An incredible bargain with a focal length that is excellent for emphasizing/isolating the subject of the photograph.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sharpness and clarity Purchased from BHphoto. Even wide aperture, it sharpness is great and far better than Tamron zoom 24-70mm at 70mm. Color rendition is also great. AE chip works great and auto focus confirmation works great. Corner sharpness at wide aperture is also very good.
