Canon HF R800 Overview

  • 1Description

Compact yet capable, Canon's black VIXIA HF R800 Camcorder is ready to shoot in nearly any scenario. Whether you're recording home videos, events, or recitals, the 57x Advanced Zoom ensures you can get the shot from the back rows of an auditorium if need be, while the Super Range O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) keeps the image steady at longer focal lengths. HD videos are recorded to separately available SD cards in the MP4 format for easy playback on most devices. MP4 files are also highly compatible with video hosting services and social media websites without format conversion.

Introduced with the HF R800 is backlight correction within the Highlight Priority mode for brighter images. The backlight correction analyzes the incoming video signal and recognizes your subject within the frame, and will expose for the subject, rather than an overexposed backlit background. This way if the sun is behind your subject, you can still get a vibrant image.

3.28MP Full HD CMOS Image Sensor
This model is equipped with a 3.28MP Full HD CMOS image sensor that supports 1920 x 1080 resolution video capture. Canon's high-resolution HD CMOS sensor features extra sensitivity that delivers lifelike Full HD video with natural color, even in low light. On-chip noise reduction supports clarity in every frame, which means your video and photos will be vivid, clear, even when played back on a large HDTV.
DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor
This camcorder incorporates an advanced Canon HD DIGIC DV 4 image processor for enhanced imaging performance. The increased performance allows for better noise reduction and leads to brighter, more noise-free images, even in dark scenes.
Powerful 57x Advanced Zoom
Thanks to an impressive 57x Advanced Zoom range, long-range shooting is not a problem. You'll be able to create videos with dynamic variety, and you'll be less likely to disrupt the action you're shooting. The Advanced Zoom works well for a variety of situations including formal ceremonies, recording animals in the wild, candid family videos, and more. The Advanced Zoom is available in manual mode and has been achieved with more efficient use of the effective imaging area. It takes the camcorder's focal length from 32.5mm all the way to 1853mm (35mm equivalent), which provides extraordinary flexibility in shooting. Plus, for more convenient shooting and better creative control over your videos, the camcorder offers continually variable zoom speed settings with three fixed zoom speeds and 15 levels available.
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer corrects camera shake instantly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths is sharp and steady. Providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion (with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths), the Dynamic Image Stabilization system on this camcorder stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling horizontal, vertical, and roll axis rotational camera shake ensures smooth, distortion-free video, even when you're walking while shooting.
SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slot
The camcorder records Full HD video directly to a removable SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. Widely available in several capacities, SD memory cards let you share your videos quickly and easily. In addition to SD memory cards, this model also lets you use high-capacity SDHC cards and super-high capacity SDXC cards.
Capacitive 3" Touch Panel LCD
A capacitive 3" touch panel LCD screen that makes recording and other operations easy. Open the panel and the power is on. A gentle touch activates the display's intuitive functions. Choose a focal point, track moving subjects, control exposure for selected areas, and operate camcorder controls from the screen, all with a touch. In addition, the easy-to-use user interface makes your shooting experience simpler. The Home button is on the menu screen, and provides quick access to all functions. Clear explanations for key settings pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so you can be confident in the decisions you make.
Slow- and Fast-Motion Recording
Record fast-motion at up to 1200x and slow-motion at 1/2x for increased creative possibilities.
Highlight Priority Mode
The Highlight Priority Mode is a gamma setting that gives an HDR-like quality to your video. By reducing the mid to high-brightness compression of the standard gamma mode, the Highlight Priority mode helps prevent loss of detail in high-brightness areas. Designed for display on a bright LCD TV, videos captured in Highlight Priority mode should be shown at a high-brightness setting to help ensure accurate portrayal of the effect. Highlight Priority mode in the HF R800 is bolstered by backlight correction which delivers a correctly exposed image, even with a bright background. Designed for display on a bright LCD TV, videos captured in Highlight Priority mode should be shown at a high brightness setting to help ensure accurate portrayal of the effect.
Framing Assistance Function
Reduces the zoom magnification when you lose sight of a subject during zooming, making it easier for you to find re-locate your subject and zoom in again.
File Lock Function
With one simple setting, you can keep your videos safe from any accidental operational errors. The File Lock function disables deletion, dividing, trimming, copying, MP4 conversion, and thumbnail changes with a touch, giving you peace of mind when children or others use your camcorder.
Camera Window Software
Camera Window software is available as a downloadable application. The software makes it easy to import MP4 and JPEG files from your VIXIA camcorder to a PC or Mac, where they can be shared and edited.

Canon HF R800 Reviews

VIXIA HF R800 Camcorder (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great budget HD camcorder This Canon HF R800 is a great buy if you are looking for a budget HD camcorder. I have number of quality digital cameras with video capabilities but this camcorder is just simpler and better to use. The image stabilization works great, screen while small, it is easy to use (big plus for the touchscreen functionality). The size and weight of this camcorder is a big plus as well. Pretty light and small even with the protruding battery in the back. So far after few recordings, I have nothing but positive comments about it. The only con is that there is no external charger included so you have to charge battery while it is connected to the camcorder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Canon product Another great Canon product.? I also have the Canon HF S20, a much more high-end Canon camcorder, but also substantially bigger. I bought this model as the form factor is small enough to fit comfortably in a cargo pocket (or wife's purse) without the bulk, but the Canon standard for high quality video is still there. A great bonus is the large battery that comes with it.? It does not come with the standard small capacity battery, but rather a larger battery that will give you a couple of hours of shooting. Here are they trade offs you get with this model - only one SD card slot, no built in memory, no hot shoe, low res still photos.? For most consumers these are features that they most likely will not miss. I recommend a couple of (minimum) 64gb SD cards so you won't run out of room.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything for the entry level video camera I bought the Vixia because I was looking for a light weight, easy to use video camera for traveling. I wanted a camera with a external microphone jack and a tripod mount, both of which the Vixia has. Overall, I am happy with this camera. I tried out a few settings for this review and this is what I found. For audio recording, the traffic setting works best at eliminating background noise. The volume adjustment is very sensitive and can be tricky to get just right. Sound quality is greatly improved with an external microphone. I found the best overall video setting to be the Cinema- Vivid setting for bright, crisp colours. I tried the beach setting at the beach and found the colours to? be washed out, but the vivid setting captured the beach scene colours well. ?Both settings worked in rooms with low lighting, but supplemental lighting would be required to create a well lit, quality video. In darkness and poorly lit areas, results were variable. I definitely? recommend the Vixia for an easy to use, entry level video camera and I am happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just point and shoot - read instructions later. It is a super great camera for my purpose. I live in a retirement home and I use the camera to record Town Hall meetings, RAC meetings, Dining committee meetings, Trip selection meetings and this camera (that is a fairly inexpensive camera of very good quality) as I said is super great. I'm very glad the B&H consultant recommended this camera. With the savings I got by buying this inexpensive webcam allowed me to buy a camera bag and an external microphone. I am one happier camper and this B&H Photo webcam is super great. I have purchased other items from B&H Photo. I do like B&H Photo for help with shopping and their prices are very fair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Best HD cameras you'll get for this money. We use it for our church's livestream. Very integratable with that type of system because of the wire connectivity. Excellent quality--use Cinematic mode on the "vivid" setting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent performance for a cheap camcorder The video quality is excellent. I love the stabilization features on it. Even when I?m walking, the camera does a good job, reducting the impacts on the image. Battery duration is good. With a full charge, you can have up to 150 min of recording in the best quality image . Maybe the W-T button is a little uncomfortable when operating the camera, but it?s not a real concern. In the bottom line, the only worse thing is that videos recorded in low-light conditions are bad, they look grainy, even setting the camera configuration to low light mode. My Samsung QF-30 from 2013 performed better in low-light. Yet my Galaxy s7 Edge performs much better. But well, maybe i could not expect much more from a camcorder of this price. In general terms, it?s a good camcorder for day shootings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Wildlife For a small camcorder, it has a great zoom at 35X optical.? I've shot quite a few live falconry and wildlife presentation with it.? The touch screen is very simple to use and the image stabilization is decent.? If you are looking to buy your first camcorder and want something lightweight, easy to use and delivers great video, then this is the one for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for price & streaming setup I have 4 of these setup in assessment rooms in a medical research setting. Room are 10 x 10 with the research subject between 4-6 away from the camera. Each camera is hooked up to an Extron SMP-111 to digitally capture the assessment for research purposes. Nothing is captured to a memory card in the camera. Pros: - You can leave these on forever connected to the supplied AC adapter once you turn off demo mode in the settings. - You can sanitize the HDMI out feed so you dont see any icons from the cameras LCD by digging into the settings menu.  This is huge for us.  - You can operate it without a memory card if youre only interested in capturing the feed off the cameras HDMI port. Youll get a warning when powering it on that there is no memory card, but that goes away. - You can plug it into AC power AND have the battery attached at the same time. It will operate off AC and charge the battery simultaneously. Its great should you lose AC power; you wont lose your settings with the battery attached. - For our purposes at least, the audio from the internal mic (default with no tweaking) is perfectly fine for people facing the camera, voices from a conference phone in the room and people facing away from the camera at an angle.  Cons: - I suppose the no shoe mount is a problem for some. You can by a C-shaped adapter that connects to the tripod mounting hole that has an un-powered mount for a mic or camera. - Its not a full size HDMI port on the camera behind the LCD screen. Youll need to make sure you buy the appropriate cables for your connection and any backup cables. For us, its not like we normally carry mini to full HDMI cables along with all our other IT spare cables.

How do you stream live with this camera?

How do you stream live with this camera?
Asked by: Kate
We use a UrayTech Video HDMI Encoder to transmit the video to a WOWZA service running on AWS EC2. The HDMI port on the HF R800 is live, the USB is only used for playback. You will need a good, stable UPFEED to the network. Most network connections have a fast download speed but a very limited upload speed. For example a DSL circuit may have a 6Mb download but only a 512Kb upload, need to check your service to determine your upload speed. To broadcast a live video at 720p you need a minimum of 1.5Mb upload, better if you can get 4-5Mb. Our primary concern was copyright, WOWZA allows us to add "watermarks" to the video before distribution. It also has a good transcoder that allows us to provide the video in multiple formats. We then transmit the video to our web site for our viewers. You can send the video from WOWZA to YouTube, Facebook etc. But we don't recommend YouTube etc. for sensitive or copyright material. be sure to read the user agreements, section 6 of the YouTube user agreement, section 3 for Facebook. Basically you give them free access to your video to use as they please.

Why is the R800 $50 cheaper than the R700? What are the major differences between them?
Asked by: Devon
These camcorders are nearly identical. These particular camcorders are getting less costly to manufacture as Canon has kept the same basic design and construction virtually unchanged for several years. The HF R800 records footage in MP4 format only. The HF R700 will record in the AVCHD and the MP4 formats.
