Shure RMCE overview

  • 1Description

The Shure RMCE is a cable accessory designed to work with Shure SE earphones and any device with a 3.5mm stereo input, such as MP3 players, smartphones, tablets, and more. Its feature set allows you full control over iOS devices, as well as limited push-button control over Android units, though this will vary from device to device.

At one end of the cable, you'll find dual MMCX terminations for connecting your SE215, SE315, SE425, SE535 or SE846 Sound Isolating earphones. At the other end, the stereo 3.5mm plug. With its three-button in-line remote, you can play, pause, skip, fast-forward, and rewind your audio content. The remote also comes in handy for phone calls, as it will allow you to answer or reject them. A built-in microphone offers you the ability to communicate not only with humans over the phone, but with Siri, who can be summoned with the push of a button.

The cable itself is Kevlar-reinforced to ensure durability over time, and measures 50" in length. Furthermore, the RMCE provides a custom wireform fit to better suit your individual choice of cable placement.

    Shure RMCE reviews

RMCE Remote & Microphone Cable for SE Earphones is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than original. This cable is much better than the original that was included with the Shure SE 215's kit. A few observations. First, obviously, is the mic/volume/track control. Not on the original (what?!) Works great with the iPhone (mine is SE), as described in the Product Highlights. Controls: Play, Pause, Volume, Next Track, Previous Track, Restart Current Track, Fast Forward, and Send/End Call. The control is located along the earphone wire so that after looping over your ear, it sits just above collar height. Tactile control is very good. Mic clarity is excellent on the receivers' end. Second is the cable cover. The outside diameter is slightly larger than the original: main cable - .093 vs .089, l/r cables - .069 vs .062. The smooth black rubberized coating does not transmit unwanted sound (microphonics) like the original. The wireform portion from the mmcx connector loop over the ear is not as stiff either, but still retains shape. Much more comfortable. Although advertised as 50 inches, the measured, shorter/lighter/more limber 48 cord on RMCE is easier to route through clothing to plug in. I always ended up trying to shove the original 60 stiff cord in my pocket and/or around my phone. The RMCE does tend to tangle easier when stowing in the carry case though. Straight 3.5mm stereo plug vs the 90 degree original. Your call. One item of note. There seems to be something loose inside of the control piece that jingles when moving rapidly (exercise/running). Could be an anomaly, and not a deal breaker either way for me right now as long as it works. Called Shure to verify this cable has a two year warranty. Good to go. I'll revisit this review if necessary in regard to durability. I have to say, with the super stiff heavy construction of the original clear cable, it sure seemed bullet proof. It'll be my spare now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what I would expect from Shure I purchase this cable with a set of SE425s to use with my iPhone when I use public transportation. I am considering returning the cable. The mic is too sensitive and picks up all surrounding noise. The only way to use it is to hold the mic at your mouth. Unfortunately the cable is too short if you are using the earphones properly, which is to route the cable over your ears. I will say that the mic works well when you are in a quite room, but if I'm in a quiet room, I don't need noise isolation earphones and can just use the Apple earbuds and could have saved $329.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. I use this cable with my iPhone 7. With the iPhone 7 you need to use their lightning adapter since Apple removed the 3.5mm port. At first I tried my third-party adapter and the sound was fine, but the remote control (volume +/- and pause) did not work. I then tried the Apple adapter that came with my iPhone 7 and the sound and the remote controls worked just fine. Bottom-line, using with the genuine Apple iPhone adapter, the cable works great. I have not tested on a device with a standard 3.5mm port, but am guessing it would work fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty good option for when you need a mic Pretty good option if you want a mic on the cable. Not as thick as I would like (or as the stock cable) but think at the connection point so I think they should work out well long term but time will tell. Working great on my iPhone and tested with a iPhone 7 lighting adaptor and it worked perfect as well. Also note these are 3.5mm but the buttons are for iOS. Many people don't seem to realize that just because it is 3.5mm it is universal. So if you are going to use these with Android don't expect the button to work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better, But Not Good Enough Yet This remote & microphone cable work very well if you are extremely careful. Recent improvements include stiffners at headphone connection to enable better fit around the ear, as well as shorter cable to decrease chances of longer cable snagging on antything. Still need to address the mini-jack connection though. Should be at 90 degrees instead of strait. The strait connector breaks or develops short if you put your devise in your pocket and sit down.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed! I have Shure SE846 In-Ear Monitors which I love, but unfortunately, the cables that came with them do not have an in-line Mic/Volume controls. So, when I saw that Shure was releasing new cables for SE Phones, I was excited. The cables itself feels thin and cheap based on the original SE846 cables, and the numerous 3rd party MMCX cables from another store. Before anything else, I am using an Android device, a Google Pixel XL, so when I used the cables with my phone music quality was great, but that wasn't why I am getting replacement cables. The buttons on the in-line controller wasn't working. The only button that worked was the main button that paused the music. Volume control was not working at all. Very disappointed. Apple removed the headset jack from their iPhones, so you would think they would focus more attention to Android users. Big let down!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More control This extension allows me to control music and phone calls from the cable. I have an iPhone 6 and it works well. The cable is thinner than the original and the over ear wire is thinner as well. It turns this is a good thing. The sound seems unaffected and the over the ear wire is much more comfortable. The mic works fine as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not for Android A marked improvement over the older in-line mic options from Shure. The cable quality still falls a bit short of their standard cables. Works seamlessly with my Macbook & iPhone. Not a suitable choice for Android users (to Shure's credit they list that in their specs).
