Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D Overview

A comfortable wide-angle, the Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D is a compact and versatile lens well-suited for landscape, nature, and documentary shooting. Its modest f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a balance between its sleek form factor and being fast enough for working in low-light conditions. In regard to the optics, a Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering when working in bright and backlit conditions. Additionally, a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Wide-angle prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.
Flexible f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers depth of field control for isolating subjects.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D Reviews

Softer Than Expected

I own several AF-D prime lenses, and haven't been disappointed with any of them except for this 28mm. It is soft (lack of contrast and detail) at pretty much all apertures. I tested it under different lighting conditions on my D750, results were the same. I was hoping to use it as an all-around lens, but the softness is a deal breaker for me. It performs as you would expect a really inexpensive zoom lens, not a like a typical Nikon prime. I don't place any blame on B&H for this; this is simply either a Nikon quality control issue or a faulty design. Either way, I'm stuck with it but won't be using it. My Nikon 24mm f2.8 AF-D and 35mm f2.0 AF-D outperform this 28mm by a longshot. If you are looking for an affordable 28mm prime, keep looking. This one was a sad let down for me.

Nikon forever !

There are no concerns about The quality of Nikon. I’ve used this line since 1966, Vietnam and have only had a few mishaps. This lense is very quiet in auto focus and presents a clear distortion free frame (minimal toward the edges) with the only drawback being the limited instructions for all scenarios.

Can’t live without it

This lens perfectly enhances photojounalistic situations by adding just enough breadth to photos that they come alive and feel just as you did when you were there.

Perfect Lens For My Needs

{ margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120%; }I wanted to round out my lens collection with a wide-angle auto-focus Nikkor for my newly acquired Nikon D610. My pick was the 28mm f2.8. It uses 52mm filters. My existing filter set should be useable. And, I can use my current 28mm lens' lens hood. I couldn't buy this lens locally, so I went online and purchased it from B&H Photo Video. I'm not a professional photographer. The 28mm's performance is more than good enough for what I'll use it. I had prints made of all the images I shot with the 28mm lens. They all look good. This lens is a keeper.

Falloff kills it

Sharp lens but the falloff on anything from f8 to wide open kind of kills this lens' usefulness. Thinking of returning it for the pricier model.

This lens is very well constructed and it's very sharp, I shot more of my photos at f/5.6 and I will say this is the sweet spot, at least in my case, so far very happy with the result this lens is producing and is very compact and light!

I am not very sure of myself with using this lens; however, in the times I have gone out to use this, I am becoming very confident of my ability. This lens is easy to use and makes me look like I know what I am doing!

Yes, you can. There are several Nikon to Sony E Mount adapters. Here is one https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1191277-REG

question

Is this lens compatible for my Nikon D3200
Asked by: Anonymous
This lens will mount onto your D3200 and will permit the auto metering functions to work, but it will not autofocus on the camera as it does not have the required built-in motor to drive the autofocus. This lens would therefore only be able to be manually focused. Unfortunately there are not any fixed focal 28mm lenses by Nikon or any other manufacturers which have the motor built into them.

question

I have a AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 f/2.8. I'm going on a trip to another country and am considering buying this lens. How would I benefit from this lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
The main benefit would be the Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens is smaller and lighter. Otherwise, the 24-70mm f/2.8 would be the better option as it would be both more flexible and would be slightly sharper (one of the few instances a zoom lens is sharper compared to a prime lens).
