Vello ESS-EC7G Overview

The ESS-EC7G Large Eyecup for Glasses for Canon 18mm Eyepieces from Vello is an over-sized soft, durable rubber eyecup that fits on any camera that uses the Canon 18mm type eyepiece. Made to accommodate eyeglass users more comfortably and without obstruction of the viewfinder, the ESS-EC7G will not scratch your glasses.

Once the eyecup is placed against the eye it will block stray and extraneous light, which creates glare and prevents you from seeing the image clearly, from entering the viewfinder. Locking into place on the viewfinder, the ESS-EC7G rotates 360° for viewing with your left or right eye as well as for vertical or horizontal viewing.

The thing is huge. I love the way it covers my whole eye, and it's actually comfortable. But it covers a fairly large part of the screen...if you're like me and you switch back and forth frequently, this might annoy you.

Excellent Light blocking for viewfinder

Whether you wear glasses or not this eyeshade works very well. Better than the stock eyepiece that comes on the camera. Once mounted to the viewfinder it allows the camera to be set away from your face and thus allowing the use of back button focus without smudging your glasses with your right thumb knuckle. I highly recommend this to those that wear glasses and use any buttons on the back of the camera while it is up to your eye.

Comfortable and effective, but perhaps not for everyone...

I wear serious corrective lenses and have equipped my Canon DSLRs with EP-EX15 II extenders and -4 diopters. I'd hoped I could adapt the diopters to this eyepiece but that's not possible. The eyecup is very comfortable and fits tightly on the camera but Canon's built-in adjuster simply can't achieve focus for my degree of correction. So I won't be using this eyecup. HOWEVER, having said that, the eyecup DOES resolve an issue in the family. They can't use my EP-EX15 combo and always take it off. Now they can attach this eyecup instead and enjoy the comfort and light-blocking it offers. For the price, I consider this a win!

Very Large

This was much bigger than I imagined. It blocks the Canon flip screen. This is a pain when you want to switch from the viewfinder.
