Metabones MB_EF-E-BT5 Overview

  • 1Description

Bring out your Canon EF and EF-S mount lenses for use on a variety of full-frame and APS-C format Sony E-mount cameras with this Metabones EF to E Mount T Smart Adapter. Further improving on previous generations of Smart Adapters, this fifth-generation model now features a rubber gasket to protect the camera's mount from dust and moisture, offers a status notification LED light to check operation modes, and a dedicated switch that controls in-body image stabilization of select cameras. Also, this version is compatible with the Sony PXW-FS7 Mark II video camera.

This adapter is equipped with numerous capabilities thanks to the use of a high-performance 32-bit processor. The features include support for both phase-detect and contrast-detect AF systems as well as the ability to control the aperture from the camera body. Smooth iris effects are possible as well on select lenses and 5-axis stabilization is available thanks to communication of distance information with supported lenses. Also, it features a programmable function button, enables electronic (focus-by-wire) manual focusing, transmits Exif data to the camera, and works with in-lens image stabilization. Additionally, distance and zoom is displayed on certain camcorders and mirrorless cameras, auto magnify can be enabled, and it can automatically switch into APS-C mode depending on the lens used.

Beyond electronic communication, the adapter has many physical advantages as well, such as a black felt flocking on the inside of the adapter that prevents reflections. For larger lenses, there is a removable Arca-type-compatible tripod foot with a 1/4"-20 thread on the base.

Allows users to adapt a Canon EF/EF-S-mount lens to a full-frame or APS-C Sony E-mount camera.
Electronic contacts permit transmission of data between the lens and camera enabling autofocus, auto exposure, image stabilization, aperture control from the camera body, saving Exif information, and more.
Status notification LED light on the adapter will show the user what mode the adapter is currently in.
Dedicated switch for controlling in-body image stabilization.
Programmable function button for rapid access to commonly used settings and features.
Support for phase-detect AF with the a7R II, a7 II, a6500, and a6300 cameras.
Compatible with Sony PXW-FS7M2 (FS7 Mark II) camera.
Smooth iris support with select Canon (2009 and later), Tamron (SP series 2013 and later), and Sigma (2016 and later) lenses.
Enables electronic manual focusing on lenses, such as the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II, that use a focus-by-wire system.
Support for distance and zoom display, auto magnify, and auto APS-C Size Capture settings on select cameras.
Internal felt flocking prevents reflections.
Removable Arca-type compatible tripod foot with 1/4"-20 thread.
Powered by camera body.

    Metabones MB_EF-E-BT5 Reviews

Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation) is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable Performance Earlier this year I purchased a Fotodiox - Canon to Sony adapter and was very disappointed with the performance. My camera would search for focus often, and even worse sometimes I would loose communication between camera and lens. I ended up selling that adapter and getting this one. This adapter is so much more reliable. It's been a few months and I've never lost communication between camera and lens. Additionally it doesn't search for focus constantly like the other adapter. If you have or plan on using Canon lenses for you Sony body this is your best and most reliable choice. Don't make the same mistake I did and do it right the first time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very dissapointed After a year of struggling with an off-brand Canon to Sony adapter for my Sony A7RII, I decided to bite the bullet and go for the supposedly best adapter (Metabones). I am truly sorry I wasted my money. It did not improve the auto-focus capability of any of my Canon lenses with the Sony. At best it takes approximately 1-1/2 seconds to lock focus, when it does work. Also, it only works when the Sony Auto-focus mode is set to Phase-detect. It does not work with contrast detect. Despite the rave reviews and specs I read prior to purchase. Another minor issue is that it has a grinding feel to it when installing the adapter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lost aperture control I purchased two of these adapters over a year ago and used them with a Sony a7sII camera and Sigma lenses. The first adapter never worked reliably. Some days it was just fine. Other days I had no options/control over my aperture. The second adapter worked great for about a year but, while out on a shoot, it too went belly and I lost control over my aperture again. Both had the same problem so I did some research and realized that this is a common issue with these Adapters. Even if they work for a while, it is only a matter of time before they go down. If using one on a shoot, I HIGHLY recommend having a backup or two. I now have 2 $400 Metabones paperweights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent hardware improvement comparing to fourth generatio Metabones listens to customer's voices. I complained the hardware problems about the previous generation last year. They made huge improvements and came up with this Fifth generation quickly. I made the same tests on this adapter as a comparison to the fourth generation and found that the misalignment problem has gone. If you own the fourth generation and observed some poor contact issues, it was caused by the misalignment of the guide pin. The best solution is upgrade to fifth generation. I have used this adapter for a few months now and so far so good. I will update the review later if I found any problem.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointe I have 6 Canon L lenses from 8mm to a 600 f4... too much of an investment to repeat with Sony lenses. The Metabones adapter appears sturdy... but it does not mount smoothly on either the Sony a7R3 or my Canon lenes. Almost like there isare burs or rough edges. It does mount though. The AF is a bit sloe... it hunts a bit, but does focus. When I change apertues, you can hear the lens cycle the blades. I never hear that when mounted on a Canon camera, but it does work. Finally and most disappointing: NONE of my Canon lenses work with the a7R3s Steady shot in-camera stabilization. Without that... this adapter is far overpriced.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Metabones Revisited I wrote a bad review (Beware the Metabones) for this product sometime back in which I gave this product one star and which received 25  thumbs up likes.  I have since returned that adapter and received another which is working much better and can give it a much better review.  I use this for video work on my Sony A7R III with Canon lenses, and after about six months it seems to be working fine.  Not perfectly for all functions for all lenses and adapters, but I mostly shoot manual so dont miss all the functions an adapter would be expected to provide.  Bottom line, I am satisfied with this product.  By the way, I have since learned you can update the firmware on this adapter which can clear up some malfunctioning that may occur.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Only but this if you are okay with average. The build quality of this is nice. Comes in a nice box and it feels solid. But it severely lacks in performance. When I first attached it everything seemed great. But after shooting with it for a little while and switching from AF to MF it started getting weird. Focus peaking was intermittent and AF randomly stopped working all together. It's really laughable that Metabones asks $400 for something that doesn't work every time. I was really hoping to use this so I could keep a couple of my Canon L series lenses but its just not going to happen. I'll be returning my copy. Do yourself a favor and buy native lenses.

what is the difference the speed booster version and this one?
    Asked by: Tyrone
The Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation) B&H # MEMBEFEBT5 listed above is simply a standard lens converter. It allows you to connect a Canon EF or EF-S mount lens onto the Sony E-mount lens mount. There is no optics in this adapter and no change to the lens' maximum aperture, nor is there any change to the lens' focal length. The Metabones Canon EF to Sony E-Mount T Speed Booster Ultra II 0.71x (Fifth Generation), B&H # MEMBSPEFEBT4, has a piece of optical glass in the center of the element. As indicated by its name, the Speed Booster boosts the aperture speed (or increases the maximum aperture) by one f-stop. Also as indicated by the name, the Speed Booster will increase (widen) the lens' angle of view by 0.71x. For example, if you were using a 50mm f/2.8 lens on the Speed Booster, the lens would become the equivalent of a 36mm f/2, as 50mm x 0.71 = 35.5mm, and one f-stop brighter than f/2.8 would be f/2.
