The Heat Company SHELL Overview

These black SHELL Mittens in size 12 from The Heat Company keep your vulnerable hands and fingers warm and protected from the elements.

Made from windproof and highly water-resistant material, the mittens have goatskin leather palms that are not only tough and wear resistant, but provide a secure and slip-resistant grip. Each mitten is lined with warm and comfortable Primaloft Gold insulation. When you need to use your fingers to operate a camera, access your phone, check your stats on a sport watch, or perform any one of a thousand tasks, simply fold back the finger and thumb flaps to expose your digits. A magnetic clasp keeps the flap out of your way, so it won't interfere with what you're doing. For added protection without sacrificing dexterity, layer the mittens over a pair of optional liners.

An adjustable cinch at the wrist has straps that allow you to remove the mitten from your hand without having to put it down where it can get filled with snow or lost. Slip a disposable hand warmer into the small zippered pocket on the back of the hand, or use it to stow small accessories like credit cards or your ID.

The size 12 mitten fits hands 10.4-11.1", measured around the palm of your dominant hand just below the knuckles. The Heat Company recommends sizing up if you are in between sizes.

The Heat Company SHELL Reviews

Great Product!

I've used the Heat Company shells twice now on early winter mornings here in Maine. Air temps were in the 20s and my hands felt perfectly comfortable. When I pulled back the covers over my fingers, on which I had liners, I was able to operate the functions on my camera quite easily. The system worked very well for me.

I use these with the separate Merino wool liners. Together they are wonderful. This combination is definitely warmer than the mittens with built in liners, which I did not like. The mittens are very functional. I am very happy.

Great combo with Merino wool glove liners. Warmer & better than the mittens with built in liners.

Perfect for cold weather photography

I used these in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last week. It was 0F and 15F on the 2 days I was in Yellowstone. These gloves kept my hands toasty. I didn't use the Heat Co liners though. I used some ~$10 liners I bought at a big box store, and they worked just fine. I'll compare shooting with these gloves to my Yosemite trip last Thanksgiving in ~15-20F where I had liners and a different brand, high-quality snowboarding mittens. With Heat Co mittens and other brand liners: - fingers get cold in unzipped mode after extended shooting...as expected because liners aren't going to keep my fingers warm in 0-15F. - fingers warm up faster once put back in the mittens. - if speed and mobility are important in your shooting, you could quickly put fingers in/out of mittens in-between shots while moving around (without zipping up). This helps to keep your fingers warm. With snowboarding mittens/liner combo: - entire hand gets cold when I pulled off the mittens to shoot...as expected. - takes longer to warm up my hands once the mittens come back on. - a hassle and slower to put on/off mittens when in-between shots. I hope this helps you determine if paying the premium is worth it for your needs. It was totally worth it for me.

I hesitated to buy these because of the price, but I'm glad I did finally get them. They kept my hands warm enough on a trip in Alaska, standing out in the cold with my camera for hours on end. Love the wrist straps, the place for hand warmers over my fingers, the long cuffs and everything about these mittens. The only change I would make would be to have the zipper on the inside of the hand go the opposite way, so only my index finger needed to be exposed to the cold, and also then that zipper pull would have been out of the way of my index finger, but it wasn't a big deal. Definitely recommend.

Not worth the money.

I bought this in conjunction with POLARTEC LINER GLOVES. They are over engineered. I found using the Elastic Wrist Straps and not the Finger & Thumb Flaps with Magnet Clasp is much quicker. So simpler mittens will do the job better for less money and equal efficiency. That would land a 4 star rating. BUT the liners DID NOT WORK, so I'm very generous with 3 stars.

Good design, maybe poor manufacturing

The good: The fingertip covers stay in place when flipped back. The gauntlet with two cinch cords is wonderful. The zippers don't let in any cold air. The bad: The palm zipper slider broke during the first hour I was wearing these--the metal casting snapped. Luckily, it broke with the zipper closed, since the windchill was -30 F and I was two miles from the car.

Nice system

I like the concept of this system. Using these mittens with one of their liner gloves allows be to stay out in the cold longer and allows me to use my camera without fully removing the mittens.
