Pigtronix QTM-U overview

  • 1Description

Inspired by Frank Zappa’s album-specific DynaFlanger sound—and encouraged into fruition by none other than his son, Dweezil—the Pigtronix Quantum Time Modulator is a chorus and vibrato pedal intended for use with electric guitar, bass, or any instrument with a 1/4" output. The pedal utilizes dual bucket brigade lines to accomplish these effects, with each line sporting an independent clock modulated by a mixture of envelope and LFO sources. The blend between envelope and LFO is entirely selectable and can be manipulated via the Source knob.

With this knob turned fully clockwise, an LFO—whose speed is controlled with its own knob—is fully modulating your instrument’s signal. A slower speed will be more atmospheric, whereas a faster speed will sound more and more accentuated and buzz when cranked in full.

Turn the Source knob fully counter-clockwise, and the modulation will be influenced by an onboard envelope which responds to the dynamics of your playing. You can set the level with the Sensitivity knob at which your playing will start to initiate chorus or vibrato effects. Choose between chorus and vibrato with the flip of a toggle switch.

The pedal provides a mono input for instruments. Its single 1/4" output, however, can be used in mono and stereo capacities. Simply use a standard instrument cable and go about your business patching the pedal into your live rig to use it in a mono fashion. For stereo implementation, use a TRS cable that splits to two separate outputs. When routed into two separate amplifiers, the effect will be more pronounced. The pedal does not accept batteries, but it does include a power adapter.

Key Features
  • Dual bucket brigade delay lines
  • Envelope and LFO modulation sources
  • Complex analog time stretching
  • Chorus or vibrato modes
Knobs at a Glance
  • SENSITIVITY: This knob controls how hard you must hit the string in order to produce a modulation voltage from the envelope circuit. Lower settings will be appropriate for hotter pickups or in situations where you want only a small amount of envelope modulation to occur. Higher settings will be needed for low output pickups or when you want to produce significant amounts of modulation via the envelope.
  • SPEED: This knob controls the rate of the LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) modulation. Slower speeds create more spatial washes while faster speeds accentuate rotary and vibrato sounds.
  • SOURCE: This control determines which of the two modulation sources (LFO or ENVELOPE) is acting on the bucket brigade delay line. When the SOURCE knob is turned fully counter-clockwise (pointing towards the SENSITIVITY knob) the Envelope is the only modulation source. When the SOURCE knob is turned full clockwise, (pointing towards the SPEED knob) the LFO is only the modulation source. Parked anywhere in between the two extremes, the SOURCE knob causes the bucket brigade delay line to be modulated by a mixture of both Envelope and LFO.
  • CHORUS/VIBRATO: This switch determines if the effect output carries a mixture of clean and modulated audio (chorus) or just a pure modulated signal (vibrato).
