Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A popular telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications, this Canon EF-mount SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens from Tamron is characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, as well as sophisticated optical and physical designs. In regard to optics, an improved layout contains one XLD element and five LD elements to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for notable clarity and color accuracy, and both BBAR and eBAND coatings have been applied to reduce flare and ghosting.

Complementing the optical assets, this 70-200mm f/2.8 also features an advanced Vibration Compensation (VC) system that compensates for up to five stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus motor is also featured for responsive and accurate performance, and also affords full-time manual focus override for fine-tuned control. Additionally, the lens is also dust- and moisture-resistant for working in trying environmental conditions, and it is paired with a rotating, removable tripod foot with an Arca-type compatible base for seamless shooting atop a tripod or monopod.

Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, this lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and affords consistent performance throughout the entire zoom range.
One XLD (extra-low dispersion) and five LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.
A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 3.1' away.
A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

    Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Awesome lens! This is my first lens of this caliber and after spending a year researching options, I have to say I'm fully satisfied with the result. Only surprise I got was the fact that it is heavy (not unusual for this type of lens)...I expected some weight but was a bit surprised at first. Canon 6D with battery grip and this lens approaches 5 pounds: if you're carrying this about, say at the zoo, a monopod would be helpful and for security I'm going to add a wrist strap for those situations. Otherwise, the photographic results are as advertised. I especially enjoy the results using this for in-studio portraits.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong Competition to the L Lens Here is the realism of the situation: If you don't mind the minor downsides of using third party (slightly slower focusing which is almost unnoticeable, the need to fix distortion in your post production, and reported focus breathing I have not tested for focus breathing personally but am aware of it's presence in the lens), this is the lens for you. Image quality is easily on par with Canon's L Lens and if you ask me the VC is better than Canon's IS. This lens is a little heavier than what I'm used to hand holding so I definitely recommend having a nice camera strap if your going to shoot for long periods of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens!! Just purchased this lens recently for my Cannon. I am a beginner photographer so this is just my own personal opinion on the lens. This lens is my first higher end lens. So far I've gotten to use it once and I love it. The VC worked pretty well. I even got a decent image at 1/13th shutter speed being hand held. This lens is very nice quality and is also heavy. When I shot with it by the end of the day my arm got a workout in shooting hand held. The Zoom ring is very smooth and fluid. It also has Beatiful Bokeh. Overall I really like the lens and I'm glad I made the purchase. Can't wait to shoot tons more in the future!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pin Sharp, Excellent Build Quality, Fantastic Results Tamron has it going on! I have already pre-ordered 24-70mm f/2.8 G2, this lens should be as good or better. This Tamron G2 lens is an absolutely awesome lens, It takes a slight amount to adjust to the zoom being on the front ring and focus being on the back ring, since all Canons are the other way around. Tamron could have made the switches a little more recessed so you don't accidentally turn AF off, or change the VC settings by mistake. But, I am very impressed with quality of build, features and superb, pin sharp pictures that it rewards me with. By the way, I love that the tripod mount is already Arca Swiss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great image quality across the frame Havent taken a lot of "real shots", but I have taken several test shots comparing directly to Canon 100-400 II and Canon 70-200 II. I find the IQ to be about the same, even under 3X magnification using LR. The tamron is superior on the edges of the frame and maintains image even off the focal plane.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressive I decided to purchase the Tamron G2 because of the price, looks and specs. After owning both the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 non-IS and IS 1st gen both legendary lenses. I decided to give Tamron a try. I'm totally satisfied with the results I've gotten from this lens. Images are tact sharp and the bokeh is sooth especially at 200mm wide open close ups. If you're on a budget and want image stabilizer with par image quality found with Canon L. Then, this is a winner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All around zoom lens price to performance Awesome product price to performance. Sharp images and great VC comes in handy when shooting low light events. Very pleased with my purchase and would recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens Having the lens for only a couple of weeks I didn't have a time to try on low light. But on sunny days it work perfectly. Will need more time to have a real opinion. I Can't compare to any other 70-200mm. But for what I get out of this lens for now, it's a great quality of photos, well build lens at f/ 2.8 with image stabilization and weather sealed. Unless you are a professional photographer or have enough money to buy the Canon L 2.8 IS II USM, you should be very happy with this lens. It's a lot of good review made by professional about this lens and I don't think you should look further for the price and quality point of view.
