Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Overview

A popular telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications, this Nikon F-mount SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens from Tamron is characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, as well as sophisticated optical and physical designs. In regard to optics, an improved layout contains one XLD element and five LD elements to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for notable clarity and color accuracy, and both BBAR and eBAND coatings have been applied to reduce flare and ghosting.

Complementing the optical assets, this 70-200mm f/2.8 also features an advanced Vibration Compensation (VC) system that compensates for up to five stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus motor is also featured for responsive and accurate performance, and also affords full-time manual focus override for fine-tuned control. Additionally, the lens is also dust- and moisture-resistant for working in trying environmental conditions, and it is paired with a rotating, removable tripod foot with an Arca-type compatible base for seamless shooting atop a tripod or monopod.

Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, this lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and affords consistent performance throughout the entire zoom range.
One XLD (extra-low dispersion) and five LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.
A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 3.1' away.
A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates. Due to this unique design, this lens is only compatible with select Nikon F-mount cameras that support an electromagnetic diaphragm, including the D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D300, D300s, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D3x, D4, D4S, Df, D500, and D5 DSLRs.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

FIRST BLUSH....

At first blush, I'm in love with this lens. DXO Mark rates it extremely high. Very fast focus, wonderful minimum DOF, great bokeh and SHARP! I did have one incident where the lens would not function but I pulled the battery and reset the camera and lens and it seems to be fine. I look forward to putting the lens through its paces and will let you know if any other malfunctions happen. I have the trio, 15-30, 24-70 and 70-200, all Tamron G2's on the Nikon 850, its a combination that is almost impossible to beat especially for the price!

Rented first, now I'm buying

I was skeptical, as I've always preferred Nikkor lenses on my cameras. I'm no longer a brand loyalist! This lens is sharp, fast, and well made. I shot a pool tournament in low light and didn't once reach for another lens. Whether I was sniping shots from 3 tables away or closeup at the active table, I got every shot I wanted. My one and only complaint is minor, but I felt the barrel wasn't that smooth compared to a Nikon lens. For nearly 1/3 the cost, I'd recommend this lens all day.

Love this lens!

This lens is a beast

I forgot to mention how handy the lens tripod collar is. Since the lens is a bit heavy the tripod collar acts as a gripping point to stabilize the lens. Really nice feature, I'm really glad Tamron added this to the lens. It is sold separately but it's over $100 so it's nice they added this to the package

I was a bit surprised how heavy this lens was but the image quality is worth it and well worth the extra weight to carry around. I've been a Tamron lens fan for years and this one does not disappoint.

Very Positive Results

While I have not had this lens very long, I am very happy with the results so far. I enjoy taking sports photos (college baseball, currently), and those have turned out exceptionally well. (I use this lens with my Canon EOS 80D digital camera.) I wanted to test the lens under the artificial lighting of a night game, but I didn't get the chance before the team I photograph played its final home game. That is the only reason I've given this lens 4 stars instead of 5 - the lack of opportunity to test it under low-light conditions. I also do some scenic/landscape and wildlife photography, but again, I haven't had the opportunity to use the lens in those situations yet. However, based on its performance at the baseball games, there's no reason for me to think it wouldn't result in excellent photos for those types of photos as well. The big test will come when I have the chance to photograph events "under the lights." But so far: I love this lens.

Good lens for the price

Good in low light sports, a little soft sometimes on the focus, but works for me
