Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD Overview

A convenient wide-angle zoom, this 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD Lens from Tamron is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, where it provides a 15-36mm equivalent focal length range. Benefitting the versatile range of perspectives is an advanced optical design that includes a pair of low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements to suppress both chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of clarity, sharpness, and color fidelity. A BBAR coating is also featured to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

In addition to the lens's optical merits, it also sports a four stop-effective Vibration Compensation (VC) system to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld. Also, an HLD autofocus motor is featured, and provides noticeably smooth, quiet, and quick focusing performance to suit both video and stills applications. The lens is also characterized by a moisture-resistant physical construction, and it has a fluorine coating on the front element to guard against dust, dirt, and smudging.

Covering a versatile range of wide-angle focal lengths, this zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, and provides a 15-36mm equivalent focal length range.
One XLD (extra-low dispersion) element and one LD (low dispersion) element are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.
A molded glass aspherical element and a hybrid aspherical element are also included in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and realize greater sharpness and resolution while limiting distortions.
A BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
An HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) autofocus motor delivers especially smooth and near-silent focusing performance, and is also quick and responsive. This focusing drive also affords full-time manual focus override for fine-tuned control.
A sealed, moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates. Due to this unique design, this lens is only compatible with select Nikon F-mount cameras that support an electromagnetic diaphragm, including the D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D300, D300s, and D500 DSLRs.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

I have yet to really put this to use. Just a few shots around the house. The Tamron 10-24 lens has found a permanent place in my bag. Going up north soon to shoot the fall colors! Tom Graham

Feeling Like I Made The Right Choice

I've recently started doing more real estate photography shoots and was in need of a wide angle lens in the 10-12mm range. I was debating and comparing between several similar lenses such as the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens, Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens and Tokina atx-i 11-20mm f/2.8 CF Lens for Nikon F. Ultimately, I ended up going with the Tamron having used their products before and with great results. Additonally for my budget, I believe you get more than your money's worth. Thus far, I have been pleased with the results and feel as this is one of my sharpest lenses. The build quality is sturdy (I've already dropped it once accidentally and haven't experienced an issue or damage to the body) and out of the box it met all my expectations, with a quick autofocus. There is still some noticeable distortion that I've had to spend some significant time in post to adjust, but that's to be expected. (Some final edits are included in this review). But I do think Tamron makes some excellent glass and am glad to have gone with this lens. I'm giving it 4 start purely based on my initial experiences with it.

So far, so good

I mounted this lens onto a Canon T7i, which I'd been using with an old Tamron 18-135. . Photos from its first outing were disappointing (soft or noticeably blurred) in spite of properly metered ISO, aperture, shutter speed settings. Switched to a 40D, and images were markedly better. Switched back to T7i, and images improved again. I'm using it mostly in good light, on stationary subjects, 12-24mm at f4-7.1, and as a 'walk around' lens. I like it now, and am hoping our relationship continues to improve.

You will have to update the lens software for use with the FTZ adapter. There is however no update at this time, you will have to check Tamron's website in the near future to see about updates.

I, honestly, don't know for sure. The lens is designed specifically for APS-C (aka DX format) cameras so I suspect it would work fine. I use mine on a d90 and d5300; it works great on both of them. I love this lens! It is sharp, the colors are great, the extra-wide view is really fun to play with, and you can get really creative with it. The vibration control is very effective.

When using a thin filter, at 10mm, you should not get vignetting. With a standard filter, you may get vignetting in this case.
