Nimble Portrait Prime
An ideal portrait-length prime, the FE 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a sleek short-telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/1.8 design is an ideal balance between speed and a compact form factor and the slightly long focal length offers a flattering perspective for portraiture and event photography.
Optical Design
  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for fine-tuned control over depth of field and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
  • One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design and helps to limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for heightened image clarity and color accuracy.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Handling
  • Double linear autofocus motor delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications.
  • Focus hold button on the lens barrel can be used to hold the focusing position, or can be set in-camera to control a variety of additional lens functions.
  • AF/MF switch for tactile control over the focus mode.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design for increased protection to the elements.

Ever since I got the 85 mm, I haven't been able to put it down for my portrait sessions. I also have a 50 mm and Tampon 28-75 mm but I cannot get over the 85 mm and the beautiful portraits it is able to take. The bokeh is beautiful and it's sharp too. At first I thought it would be more limited to just individual portraits since it's a longer focal length than other lenses but I have used it for families and sessions with more than a few people. It's been almost three years now and I have used it for 85-90% of my sessions. Highly recommend for those that love to do portraits. You won't regret it. :)

So impressed with this lens. Takes very lovely high quality portrait shots with precise auto focus on the song a7c. It's lightweight and affordable

I am a professional that does freelance photojournalism, commercial photography, portrait / headshot and event work. I have owned both the Sony 85 1.4 GM and the Zeiss Batis 85 1.8. The 85 1.4 GM is very large and heavy. It's autofocus is somewhat slow and hunts. It's pricy. The Zeiss Batis 85 1.8 is a wonderful lens with outstanding color. It's also pretty large, but not nearly as heavy as the Sony 85 1.4 GM. This Sony FE 85 1.7 is incredibly light and has great autofocus. It's wonderful color rendition is similar to the Zeiss Batis. It's not quite as sharp as the Batis or the Sony 85 GM - but it's not very far off. It's in the league of the professional lenses at a much better price. It's similar in form, function and color rendition to my Sony FE 55 1.8 - which I also love. I could literally do a street assignment with the 55 1.7 and this 85 1.8 and my editors (and I) would be thrilled. Get this beauty.

Exactly what I needed

I know a lot of people use this for a portrait lens, but I bought it because I shoot in my church and at my job at a Rescue Mission, and this lens is the perfect lens for everyday pictures in the setting I use it for. I am currently using an A6000 (hope to upgrade soon) and the pictures are clear and really pop with this lens. I also use a Sigma 30mm and a Sony 18-105... but this has become my favorite lens to use.

Had to get it replaced

Lens has a vignette flare on bottom of frame when used in strong back lit situations. I sent the lens in for repair, the repair shop had it for two weeks the first time, they could not replicate flare. Second time in the shop for 7weeks. Still couldn't replicate, but they never took it outside in the sunlight to test. In between the two trips to the shop, Sony sent a loan lens for me to compare. My lens failed, the loaner did not. Finally Sony offered an exchange. Waiting on delivery today.

For the manual focus setting: is this focus by wire or physical? I mostly shoot with vintage full manual lenses and I'm used the more physical dynamic. Whenever I use my one focus by wire AF lens the different figuring feel drives me a little batty.
Asked by: Gibbs
PIDA257CBFBK has a double linear AF motor itself that affords quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance, and this motor also offers snappy manual focus performance for fine-tuned control with an intuitive physical layout that incorporates a customizable focus hold button and a physical AF/MF. You can easily turn manual focus on the lens and use the ring to have a smooth manual focus performance.
