Nimble Portrait Prime
An ideal portrait-length prime, the FE 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a sleek short-telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/1.8 design is an ideal balance between speed and a compact form factor and the slightly long focal length offers a flattering perspective for portraiture and event photography.
Optical Design
  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for fine-tuned control over depth of field and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
  • One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design and helps to limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for heightened image clarity and color accuracy.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Handling
  • Double linear autofocus motor delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications.
  • Focus hold button on the lens barrel can be used to hold the focusing position, or can be set in-camera to control a variety of additional lens functions.
  • AF/MF switch for tactile control over the focus mode.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design for increased protection to the elements.

No complaints given it's the mid-range lens. Performs as I'd expect.

What a great lens I use i on my Sony A7C. Great for both portraits and low light. Really beautiful bokeh. Great for architecture in the city at night or street photography or when you need some reach

Ever since I got the 85 mm, I haven't been able to put it down for my portrait sessions. I also have a 50 mm and Tampon 28-75 mm but I cannot get over the 85 mm and the beautiful portraits it is able to take. The bokeh is beautiful and it's sharp too. At first I thought it would be more limited to just individual portraits since it's a longer focal length than other lenses but I have used it for families and sessions with more than a few people. It's been almost three years now and I have used it for 85-90% of my sessions. Highly recommend for those that love to do portraits. You won't regret it. :)

Portrait with my a7c kit for lightweight beauty, does beautifully on my a7R4A also. Fast true focus perfect wide open, doesn't break the bank!

barely used no more than 10 times, suddenly lens totally out of order, cannot focus, camera cannot turn off once lens on, and it's exactly passed 1 year warranty.

I would buy it again!

I use this lens for Wedding video & Couples/Solo photography, and it is definitely my favorite! Yes, you can find other lenses that will offer you sharper images, but usually those are double the price, the size and of course the weight! For practical purposes it is a great lens, it will give you a beautiful and creamy bokeh, the autofocus is very fast and very silent, for pics and video, chromatic aberration at 1.8 it is noticeable for an expert eye, vignetting is way better than I expected, the fabrication quality is good, the focus ring is smooth. It is a no-brainer.

For the manual focus setting: is this focus by wire or physical? I mostly shoot with vintage full manual lenses and I'm used the more physical dynamic. Whenever I use my one focus by wire AF lens the different figuring feel drives me a little batty.
Asked by: Gibbs
PIDA257CBFBK has a double linear AF motor itself that affords quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance, and this motor also offers snappy manual focus performance for fine-tuned control with an intuitive physical layout that incorporates a customizable focus hold button and a physical AF/MF. You can easily turn manual focus on the lens and use the ring to have a smooth manual focus performance.
