Canon Rebel T7i Overview

Packing a versatile feature-set in a sleek and portable body, the EOS Rebel T7i DSLR from Canon offers advanced imaging capabilities along with a convenient range of controls and connectivity. Utilizing a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor, the Rebel T7i is able to capture high-resolution stills and video with an expanded sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200 to suit working in a wide variety of lighting conditions. The sensor and processor combination also avails 6 fps continuous shooting for working with moving subjects. Benefitting the imaging attributes, the sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth focusing performance when recording movies or shooting stills in live view. When shooting stills using the optical viewfinder, a 45-point all cross-type phase-detection system is used for quick and accurate focusing in a variety of shooting scenarios.

In regard to the physical design, a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD is featured for intuitive settings control and live view monitoring, and it uses a vari-angle design to permit easier viewing from high and low working angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible native ISO 100-25600 range, which can be extended to ISO 51200, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 6 fps continuous shooting rate for photographing fast-moving subjects.
45-Point All Cross-Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems
Benefitting stills shooting with the optical viewfinder, a wide-area 45-point all cross-type phase-detection autofocus system provides quick and precise focusing in difficult lighting conditions. The cross-type design of the sensors affords greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects.

When recording video or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording
In addition to stills recording, the T7i also supports Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 60 fps in the MP4 format with IPB compression, or 30 fps in the MOV format with ALL-I compression when making in-camera time-lapse movies. Video recording is benefitted by the inclusion of Dual Pixel CMOS AF and the Movie Servo AF focusing functions, as well as the touchscreen design of the LCD monitor for intuitive control. Movie Electronic IS is also featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake across five axes for smoother, steadier recording when shooting handheld. Additionally, an external microphone jack is incorporated in the body design for greater control over your recorded sound.
Unique to most video recording systems, the T7i also features an HDR Movie mode that can be used to achieve greater highlight and shadow detail when recording in high contrast scenarios. This mode captures two HD frames at different exposures, one normal and one underexposed, in short succession at up to 60 fps and then composites them during playback at 30 fps to create a movie with a longer-appearing dynamic range.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a vari-angle design to better enable working from high and low angles.
  • Optical pentamirror viewfinder serves a clear means for eye-level shooting.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Included LP-E17 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 820 shots per charge.
EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens
Included with the camera body is the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, which provides a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range that covers a variety of perspectives from wide-angle to portrait-length. Its design integrates an STM focusing mechanism that provides near-silent focusing abilities with smooth and precise control. Additionally, the Optical Image Stabilizer system helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps in order to benefit working in low-light conditions and with greater zoom magnifications.
Other Camera Features
  • A 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor benefits both autofocus and exposure metering precision and enables Color Tracking for more accurately detecting skin colors.
  • Creative Filters can be applied to creatively refine the look of imagery in-camera, and include Art Bold, Water Painting, and Fisheye Effect for stills, as well as Dream, Old Movies, Time Lapse, and Memory for video.
  • A Feature Assistant user interface is available to highlight and guide use of specific camera modes and features.
  • Picture Style modes: Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Fine Detail, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, and User-Defined settings. Language support: English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Ukraine, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Canon Rebel T7i Reviews

Best Camera I've Used

I purchased my T7i 2 years ago from B&H and have never once regretted it. I won't say that everyone needs to get this particular camera because everyone's wants/needs in a camera vary, but this T7i has been my dream come true! I have used many of my friend's Rebel T7s and T6s since, and am so thankful I spent the extra and bought the T7i... The lighting and detail is absolutely incomparable, even on the automatic settings. I also love the settings on the camera itself - very easy to use and perfect for beginning photographers. I am still an amateur but have never found another camera easier to use or that takes pictures with such clarity. I bought my camera mainly for capturing memories on family vacations and trips with friends, but it has turned into much, much more. Definitely look into this camera and consider buying it - it's worth the money and more!

I purchased the T7i to replace the Rebel 300D I have. It still worked, just felt I needed and upgrade. This one is lighter even with the kit lens or a telephoto lens on it. The LCD screen in nice a bright and easy to maneuver as a touch screen and with Live view which is a nice feature as well. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

When I moved to digital photos from film, I started off with a small point & shoot Power Shot. It was small - fit in my pocket, and really simple. But I wasn't able to do a lot of stuff I used to with my old Canon F-1. So I bought a Sony A6000 with a variety of lens. I've used it for a few years but find it as user friendly as a bad headache! So I decided (finally) to go back to Canon and purchased this kit. So far so good. I've found it has the intuitiveness the Sony lacked - for me at least. I'm not a professional photographer and have no intention of becoming one. But at least now I can play with depth of field and low light shots before they're missed. Eventually, if all continues going well, I will invest in some faster lens and maybe a good primary. But for now I'm excited to get out and use it.

Great for beginners!

Some of this carries over to the T8i, too, as it has the same disappointing specs. I upgraded from a Digital Rebel XT / EOS350D / Kiss Digital N, so there's a huge QOL upgrade there going from a very old CompactFlash device. Having live preview and video is awesome! The features I'm unhappy with are quality of life things no device released in the past 5 years should have: 2.4ghz 802.11n Wifi only (still true on the T8i): Transferring pictures via the app is great, but it's very slow. It should support 802.11ac (Wifi 5). USB 2, mini-connector (slightly updated for the T8i): an outdated connector and a slow transfer speed. The T8i upgrades it to a Micro-USB. Wow. No time zone support (still true for the T8i): if you don't travel, this isn't a problem. However, if you do, the camera does not store files with a time zone offset from UTC, but only in the time zone you set it at. If you forget to change it before you take pictures, when you go to import them to your PC, you'll get the wrong time. Very annoying if trying to keep them in sequential order with other devices you have, like your smartphone. The microphone is kind of noisy, but it's not a high end device, although most phones do better. The mode selection dial is way too easy to knock into the wrong mode. The sensor is good and the speed is good as other reviews can attest to.

The camera is great for getting images. I use manual settings and I am pleased with what I get. I bought this camera specifically for the blue tooth function so I could transfer photos on the go. I can't get it to connect to my phone for image transfer. I have followed the step by step guide without success.

Not only is it compatible with earlier EF series lenses, with the appropriate Canon adapter, you can use FD series lenses, although without the auto focus etc features of the camera.

Currently my Nikon Coolpix B700 has 4.3 - 258 zoom. Would I get better close-ups of birds with this camera?
Asked by: Deb
How close you get is determined by the lens you use. Assuming the 2 cameras have similar size sensors, you would need a 300mm lens on the Canon to get closer. Having said that, this Canon is a good camera to discover all the features of a DSLR.
