ASUS U7 MKII 7.1 overview

  • 1Description

The Xonar U7 MKII 7.1 USB Soundcard and Headphone Amplifier from ASUS helps overcome the limitations of other external USB-based audio devices by delivering 7.1-channel surround sound with 192 kHz / 24-bit fidelity and a 114 dB SNR for clear and crisp HD audio output. Its integrated headphone amplifier helps boost sound, while dedicated headphone and microphone volume controls allow users to make quick audio adjustments while gaming or streaming media. There is also a clickable volume control knob that allows for switching between the headphone and speaker output, and Sonic Studio software helps map opponent locations while engaging in first-person shooters. The Xonar U7 MKII is compatible with Windows and Mac OS, and included is a USB cable and an S/PDIF adapter.

General Features

Compact & Portable
Xonar U7 MKII engineering helps overcome the space and power supply limitations of other external USB-based audio devices to offer 7.1-channel surround. Sound processing uses 192 kHz / 24-bit fidelity for high definition output, maintaining consistent quality across all surround channels.
114 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
Greater audio clarity compared with the SNR ratios of average onboard audio units.
Hyper Grounding Technology
ASUS Hyper Grounding PCB fabrication helps ensure strong signal insulation to reduce distortion and interference, also known as component crosstalk.
Digital to Analog Converter (DAC)
A Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC (digital-to-analog converter) brings clarity with a good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low total harmonic distortion (THD).
Integrated Headphone Amplifier Pumps Up Sound Details
Xonar teams have integrated a headphone amplifier on the U7 to boost immersive headphone output.
Dedicated Headphone and Mic Volume Controls
Dedicated headphone and microphone volume controls enable audio level adjustments without the need to pause your game or navigate software menus, helping to ensure uninterrupted gaming and media streaming experiences.
Switch Between Headphone and Speaker Outputs
The headphone volume control knob doubles as a clickable output selector for switching between listening with headphones and speakers.
Plug-and-Play USB Convenience
With its USB design, the Xonar U7 MKII upgrades your PC's audio performance simply by plugging it in. It draws power directly from the USB port, thus eliminating the need for a separate power adapter. Its compact design fits almost anywhere and is easily portable, so you can bring it with your laptop and enjoy improved audio while on-the-go.
Sonic Studio
The Xonar U7 MKII features the Sonic Studio software suite for control over sound technologies from equalization (EQ) to 7.1-speaker level-balancing. Sonic Studio has a single navigation page that puts everything in front of you, with an intuitive point-and-click interface that allows you to pre-set audio profiles to suit different audio requirements.
Sonic Radar Pro
Fire up your favorite game and Sonic Radar Pro displays a 'radar' HUD (heads-up display) that pinpoints in-game actions relative to your position, so you'll know where you are on the battlefield and what's happening around you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for gaming, not videos I bought this to replace my old Xonar Essence STX that I'd had for ages. I stuck with Asus because I was accustomed with their software so I knew what to expect from this device regarding sound quality. I was initially very please with the devices large volume/control wheel which made switching between my speakers and headphones quick and painless, though a headache eventually came after switching a couple times. After switching between speakers and headphones I noticed I wasn't getting audio in some of my games. Through some trial and error I found that my system was trying to output some of my game audio to the SPDIF output despite the Headphone option being selected within the software. Disabling and re-enabling the SPDIF output through Window's Playback Devices menu seemed to solve this, and just to be safe I reinstalled the drivers. This review comes after a couple months of use. During this time I've noticed some audio inconsistencies such as white/signal noise and popping when my headphones and speakers are plugged in. I do not know what causes this. Overall I've been pleased by this purchase, despite the flaws I've noticed.
